Here's how to report your neighbor for not clearing their sidewalk

Snow removal service in Montgomery County is inexpensive. We pay only $150 to have our 20' x 100' driveway and 200' public sidewalk cleaned. If they have to do it twice like this past weekend, they may charge only $275. We feel this is a deal because we spend at least that much during grass cutting season.

Starting this afternoon I’m going to start reporting unshoveled homes and cars that are blocking sidewalks in Olney. I just got back from walking my dog and there are so many homes that are completely untouched and a few people who chose to block the sidewalk instead of parking in their driveways.

Why would they park on the sidewalk if they have a driveway?

+1 what the heck is wrong with op? It's solid ice!

What about streets with sidewalks on only one side? Shoukd the people without sidewalks ever shovel the sidewalk across the street?

Just because you're miserable because of having to walk your dog, it doesn't mean that you need to make everyone else miserable. Get a life or ask them if they need help shoveling.

This was a different storm. People are unable to break the ice on pavement. Ice melt is not going to work. Ice is also not melting on its own with temps so low.

Just like people will be reporting ugly people and their ugly dogs.

You need a pickaxe to break through the ice. The city isn't going to cite anyone.

This is a total jerk move. Kind of like the people who go around suing small business websites for not having their screen readers working 100% perfectly. My SIL is an artist and had made a tiny website to sell some art and she got hit by that lawsuit.

We paid $$ to get things cleared including public sidewalk. Arlington finally plowed last night. Sidewalk and driveway apron covered and wall of ice too. Waiting for paid service to come back. We are old. Sorry.

In Fairfax County, there is no legal requirement or rule requiring sidewalk clearing. Heck, in a lot of the county there are no sidewalks at all.

We usually clear our sidewalk, even though it goes nowhere (the sidewalk just stops abruptly). This time we've tried and the ice covering it now simply can't be cleared with shovels, snow blowers, or ordinary equipment.

OP needs to relax.

Even if ice melt worked, the melted ice would refreeze. How many times do you expect people to break out a pickaxe this week?

I have always cleared my sidewalk, even when we got 30” of snow in 2016. I can’t clear this. I have cancer and recently started chemo. My neighbors don’t know. I’ll be pissed if they report me.

I've lived in Fairfax County for 25 years. Just learning this. This may be my favorite thing about it.

Unfortunately Fairfax and Prince William counties don't have enforcement, to my knowledge.

What is with all the bad neighbors in this thread? Is that the community you want to live in? One where everyone shirks their responsibilities? Be a good neighbor. Either figure out a way to clear your sidewalk or ask your neighbor for help. If you ask for help, be willing to help them in the future.
