Will Wake ever be in the #30s again?

Honestly, let’s get serious: does anyone really think WF is anywhere near as strong as UVA or UNC? Nope.

Sorry to break it to you but UVA is nowhere near UNC. And yes I would consider WF similar to UVA - they’re both solid in academics but not amazing.

+1

Wake, BC, UVA, Tufts, all peers schools, maybe throw in USC as well. I don’t think the so-called Wake boosters are arguing differently. Not sure why UNC is seen as a tier above. It’s harder than UVA for oos admittance by a good measure, but far easier for in state admission.

Wake has double the admission rate of the other schools you listed.

Wake’s admit rate is 21 percent. BC and UVA are a few points lower. USC doesn’t count spring admits and guaranteed transfers in its rate, neither of which Wake has.

BC’s admission rate is 14%
UVA’s admission rate is 18%

I don’t think you can directly compare admit rates. You need to compare things that are the same prices. For example, if the OOS tuition for UVA is the same as WF tuition then you could compare. But if kids are picking UVA in state because it’s a half or a quarter of the price then that’s not a reflection on perceived quality of the college. The question is where do families choose to go when they are spending a certain amount of money. All things being equal, I’d send my kids to WF any day rather than UVA and I’m sure that the vast majority of the country would do the same.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but plenty of people would pick UVA over WF...it's kind of nuts to claim the vast majority would pick WF. The campus is meh...Winston Salem is a fairly depressing town so adds no value to WF (other than I guess an airport...though not sure people actually fly into that airport)..school is fine, but isn't tops in anything.

UVA had 42,540 OOS applicants for 5,530 OOS slots last year vs 17,500 total applications to Wake Forest for 3,600 slots. Considering OOS tuition for UVA for business and engineering tops $90k/year (and it's $78k for other majors), seems like in fact more OOS kids are interested in attending UVA vs. WF.

In NC, it's Duke and UNC Chapel Hill.

That's it.

WF is an afterthought.

The actual measure of which school is preferred would be to compare the yields (percentage of admitted students enrolled), not admissions. WF’s yield is indeed higher than UVA’s out of state yield.

I wouldn't 'throw in' USC with those other schools. It's at least a tier below, USNWR rankings be darned.

UVA>USC>>BC>Tufts>Wake

USC has actually been T25 in the last 20 years. Unlike Tufts, BC, and Wake.

VMI has a better yield than Wake or UVA; therefore, VMI is preferred to either Wake or UVA.

It is ridiculous to nit pick among these schools- same quality of education at any of them. Some appeal more than others based on location, campus, vibe etc. (for example, despite both being in/near Boston, there aren’t going to be many kids who feel equally about BC and Tufts …).

I hate to break it to you, but a majority of the country has never even heard of Wake Forest.

Because they can’t afford the private tuition and/or don’t think they’d fit in so why bother looking into it. I don’t actually have a dog in this fight. I’m in a different part of the country and frankly hadn’t heard of either WF or UVA before I started reading DCUM (beyond the obvious of working out that UVA is the state flagship). All I can say is that if I had to pay 30k or 90k for either one then I’d never consider UVA. I do agree that the other NC colleges are more highly regarded than WF (and certainly far more than UVA).

This thread is at odds with the “most beautiful campuses” and “happiest students” ones on the main page of this forum, because Wake surely belongs in both of those threads. WF is a great college and every kid I’ve known who is there now, recently graduated, or graduated back in my college days in the 1990s, loved their time there. Who cares what it is ranked, especially when colleges like Rutgers are what vaulted to “best” them.

meaning kids aren’t picking tufts over bc or bc over tufts bc of the usnwr ranking- the vibe of each is pretty different. likewise if a kid gets into bc and usc, they prob have some location preference vs the rank being the factor which determines selection.

it is ridiculously nit picky to try to rank among those colleges listed. harvard vs wake, sure. bc vs wake, no.
