I'm not voting for him because his experience is a decade too late. And if he's so tired at candidate forums, OMG what will he do at school board meetings that regularly runs until midnight! Oh, and he's for SROs, which is a no-go for me. |
You sound like my MAGA neighbor talking about Sleepy Joe. |
+1 People act like these elections arent just popularity contests. Vote for someone whos worked in the education field for most of their life? Nah, Ill vote for a party plant who joined a committee 6 months before officially becoming a candidate and then spends the next 3 forums bringing it up like she changed the world |
What part of "being pro-SROs is a no-go" makes me MAGA though? He's just like that retired teacher who ran a few cycles ago. Sandy I don't remember her last name? She should have won just by being a teacher, but didn't have the presence to get through a candidate forum. Being prepared and answering questions fully and coherently counts for a lot. |
Same poster as above. I do agree that Zuraya has no business running either, but between three bad choices, I have no choice but to vote for her. |
ArlNow had a story this morning about Arlington Campaign donations and endorsements. I got curious and went to VPAP. Chen apparently has only raised money from 4 individuals and took out a $10K loan for his campaign. Zuraya right now is funded almost exclusively by other Hispanic people. Kathleen is the only one that has raised money from a diverse group of people of names I mostly recognize. And of course, I can't find Larry's financial disclosures. |
I went to two forums and spoke with the candidates, and here are my thoughts:
Chen - really smart, really friendly. Obviously learning a lot - the difference between my first and most recent conversation with him is large. I hope if he loses he runs again. He's the kind of thoughtful and approachable that we need for APS. Kathleen - very nice to talk to, obviously very plugged in especially for special ed. Not as polished as Chen or Zuraya but very genuine. Gave thoughtful answers to my questions. Larry - nice but awkward to talk to. He's retired and have grown kids so is able to dedicate full time to the Board. I worry though that he won't be able to effectively work with other SB or CB members. Zuraya - very friendly as well, but I was not as impressed with her answers. My earlier and more recent conversations with her were about the same -- there wasn't the growth that I saw with Chen. Overall I'm picking Chen and Kathleen because I think they'll be the most accessible and accountable, and had the best answers in the forums. However everyone that's running is awesome for doing this -- some of us were afraid that no one would run for this hard and thankless job. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. No one is perfect. I wish everyone running the absolute best and hope they continue to be involved in APS. |

I haven't spoken directly with the candidates, but my impressions are similar. I'm voting Kathleen #1 and Chen #2. |
I would welcome a return to APS from a decade ago. Who ISN'T tired at long tedious school board meetings? Maybe he can send a signal by falling asleep and/or speed things up - perhaps by eliminating all the repetitive congratulatory and good job commentaries as a start. SROs are fine with me - and far more engaged and effective than the "security officers" who do NOTHING and have no real authority to do anything. |
I will not vote for an APE plant. So no Chen for me.
And police-free. I don’t even like the SSOs and would love to kick them out. There are problems at Wakefield, but not because of those Brown and Black “gangs” like Larry and fellow racists go to. Please. So that leaves Kathleen and Zuraya. Who are the two who will win anyway. |
A source on what? The EdTech committee just got started last year, and as of January 2024, the committee had met only 3 times. This is publicly available information. So if Zuraya went to all the meetings, that means she went to a grande total of 3 meetings. Hardly the experience I'm looking for in a candidate. I almost prefer Chen. At least he's not trying to claim he's experienced based on joining a committee yesterday and attending a few committee meetings. |
I noticed that Zuraya is funded mostly by people outside of Arlington. |
Didn’t she end up having some bad positions at some point after the election? |
Yes, it's a good thing she did not win. She had some comments online that showed that. Not all teachers are good people or should be on the Board. |
