DPR Youth Basketball games remain cancelled for Sunday, January 21. As basketball was previously cancelled, we are unable to reschedule officials, facility monitors and ensure that each facility will be open. We look forward to returning to normal operations on Monday.

Still no basketball. Reasonable explanation.

Although APS has decided to open buildings on Sunday, the Department of Parks and Recreation, who provides Arlington Soccer with permits for the facilities, has notified us that they are unable to confirm the support and facility readiness needed to open the gyms.

Again, unfortunately, Arlington Soccer will not be holding any indoor clinics at APS Facilities on Sunday, January 21.

Staffing is an issue everywhere. You going to volunteer to help with snow removal, etc?

I don't think that's what they're saying. It looks like no one is answering the phone at APS to confirm to DPR that they will have the specific buildings open on Sunday. I don't know why you're acting like APS didn't mess this up.

It’s reasonable that DPR now can’t get facility monitors and referees who thought their weekend work was canceled and might have made other commitments.

No, you are missing the point. The point is that they screwed up by cancelling Sunday on Friday. These events all were staffed. APS created this issue, and tried to dial it back. It was a good attempt, but they can't undo it at this point. Many of us are still mad at the original stupid call that put us all here, because it's obvious that the Sunday stuff could have happened if not for the bad Friday call. Thus the residual anger.

DPR is the County and APS is totally separate. The county runs rec basketball and relies on school gyms. I think the point was just it’s a reasonable explanation from DPR about why they can’t now turn on a dime and staff rec basketball properly. That’s all. You can still be mad at APS. No one stopping you.

When I feel myself getting up worked up this much about something minor and inconsequential I remind myself there’s 2 million people displaced in Palestine and 64% of the population has lost a family member or loved one to a bombing since October and it gives me some needed perspective . We simply do not have it this bad.

I am the person above and rest assured I am not losing sleep over it. But this is a stupid argument and you know it. I have the capacity to be bothered about multiple things at the same time while also having perspective. Do you?

Arlington consistently makes crappy weather decisions that capriciously take things away from kids that they value. That bothers me. And it will continue to bother me, despite all the other crappy things that happen in the world. We can do something about it, and should, so I will keep speaking up.

And, again, the whole reason I am bothered is because of people like you who treat these things so lightly: "minor and inconsequential" indeed. Do you feel that way about children's birthday parties? The "little" stuff matters to kids. That's why it's not little. That's why it's the essential stuff. Until adults get that and try their darndest to protect that, we keep screwing kids for no good reason. I am not out yelling hateful things at people on the street about this, but do I think our leaders should do more and will I tell them so? Yes indeed.
