Why do old people like pie?

Anonymous
Where are folks buying their pies these days? Some of the usual spots are not offering them this Thanksgiving.

Why do younger people insist upon making over-generalizations about diverse groups of people and entire generations. Yes, like I just did. Just tell the cute story about your neighbor. There’s no need to leap from your neighbor as an individual, to a huge, multi-generational group of people.

Grumpy oldster.

I truly don’t get pumpkin pie, but will try very hard not to over-generalize about the people who seem to eat it happily.

OP isn’t wrong. No one is baking pies for grade school parties. Generally, you either learn to love pie as your tastebuds change or you grew up with it 60 years ago. Both tend to an older population.

Agree. Plus pies are very time consuming to make. An apple pie from scratch takes nearly all day: make the crust, refrigerating it, peeling and slicing all the apples, rolling out the dough and shaping pie, chilling or again, then it bakes for over an hour, then has to cool close to warm/room temp to fully set. I only make pie for holidays.

I make pies regularly. It does not take all day! I cook and bake efficiently and can typically get a pie in the oven in a hour. It's even quicker if you get the dough made in advance, I do it the night before and it takes 20 minutes to pull together and then let it chill overnight. Apple pies are pretty straightforward and there is a reason for the old saying as easy as a pie.

Making the dough: 20 min
Chilling 20 min
Peeling and slicing apples 20 min
Rolling out dough, filling, and chilling again 30 min
Baking 60-80 min
Cooling: at least an hour

That’s not quick. Perhaps if you are going to do it in parts over the course of a couple days it isn’t that bad. But even just the bake time and cutting and peeling and cutting all the apples is significant

I don't think you are a cook but someone stirring up a thread because you're bored. All cooking takes time. With a little practice pie is pretty easy and straightforward.

Because they are delicious, some pies. I am from central Europe, so our "pies" are different, but DH loves pies. I like fruit pies. I also used to love Lemon Supreme from Village in. Can't have it now since diagnosed with a dairy allergy. Right now, we have three pies in the house. Pumpkin, apple, and home made four berry pies that I made.

Kids will like it as soon as someone on TikTok makes videos about making pie.

On this topic, is Costco having right now that four berry pie they had for 4th of July?

I like hearing about older people who eat foods they enjoy because my mom and MIL both diet obsessively and are afraid of sugar and butter. They wouldn't eat pie, which is a shame. Pie is great.

It’s not so much the price at a good bakery — $25-30 isn’t crazy expensive for a good pie — it’s just we don’t generally need an entire pie in our fridge. Or it will be consumed!

When I get the itch at the bakery, I just get a single slice.

OMG, can you just sh*t up with your eating disorder?

NP. When I was single I would make a pumpkin pie just for me and eat a slice for breakfast and dessert every day. There's nothing wrong with having and consuming an entire pie!

Thank you for noticing.

You don’t spend decades on this earth without gaining some knowledge!

Everyone in our family loves pie. I usually don't have time to make it, so make a quick galette instead. Last night I made apple, cherry and almond galette. It was delicious.

Idk but WTAF! Stop being so ageist. It makes you look dumb, besides.

You should see the Jobs thread if you think this is bad. Disgusting ageism.

I'm confused by this? I mean, any dessert you make will take some time. A cake needs to be measured/mixed, baked, cooled, and then often frosted (making that? Add extra time). Pie is no more time consuming than a frosted cake (unless you use a mix and canned frosting).
