Basketball summer leagues-county level travel

How can you tell if a bunch of random kids are the "right" age? You can't, just by looking. That's why the roster needs to match the kids who are at the game.

Yup. One 2-year-older kid on a soccer or baseball field really doesn't make that much difference. A six footer in a 6th grade basketball game? No bueno.

Did the Shots Up/STJ league really fold? Its still .listed on the tourney app? Last I heard, that's where our team was playing.

I doubt it. They don’t necessarily need St James. They also hold games at The District and FCPS.

Last summer, all their games were at the st james.

Fcps has already issued their summer gym permits and our community rec league got a lot less space than usual. Fairfax told us a lot of gyms were not being permitted this summer.

Stars only checks rosters if a coach requests it. Last year a girls team was DQ'd because of it

Which team?

Ha, the last year before Covid, my son's team was playing a Stars team in the Stars league. His coach asked for a roster check and they had two non-rostered kids on the court. The Stars teams are sketchy.

This isn’t the NBA. I don’t mind if a kid playing isn’t on the roster as long as they are the right age. What pisses me off is when they bring in older kids to win.

i think the issue is that if they aren't on the roster, you have no idea how old they are. you can have a huge roster in these leagues, there is no reason not to have a kid on the roster who is going to play UNLESS you are cheating.

Guest playing happens frequently in soccer when teams experience injuries and need help filling out a roster--I agree with the other post, if they are the right age AND the team clearly needs some players to A: simply field a team or B: at least have some subs (e.g. up to 5 subs), then go for it. I do believe of course some folks just add players to win.

Nonsense. You have to follow the rules of the league you are playing in. The Stars league requires players to be listed on the original and official roster to play, so you can't have randoms showing up. You play in a soccer league that allows guest players, that's completely different.

This is PP, the point assumed that if it was allowed by the league (guest playing) then by all means. In leagues that do allow guest playing (in other sports), many teams utilize that based on need to fill out a roster but many certainly do it to try and get a win. DS played same team twice this past season and the roster for the second match was about 66% different (and more competitive) than it was for the first match.
