Everything you mention is perfunctory, but not emotional connection. Can your adult kids talk to you? Do they feel they have an adult-to-adult relationship with you? Do you let them know how much you want them to visit? Do you show them any vulnerability? I miss you, would love to see you. Can you go visit them?

The generation they produced is out of shape, pale, low fertility can’t plunge a toilet or change a tire. Of course there are exceptions but the overall population looks terrible compared to prior generations.

This is just so not true universally. A lot of it depends on where the parents live, I'm from this area and a LOT, a LOTTT of people from my high school are back now because job opportunities are good here and the combo of that with being close to grandparents for your kids is enticing. The vast majority of these folks though did leave for long periods of time - I went to a different part of the country for college, and then another totally different part of the country for graduate school and still ended up back here.
