+1 not yield protection according to Naviance (MCPS HS) and what I'm seeing on Facebook groups. No evidence of kids denied with those stats. That is shocking. Sorry OP. I would check with HS counselor. Issues with rec form or other teacher recommendations? Essay?

+1 UMD is not that easy to get into it these days, even with high stats.

I know that high stats kids are being rejected. Surprised OP's kid wasn't offered Spring admit or deferred.

PP here with high-stats MCPS kid who was rejected. No, not going to reach out to a counselor in case there was a "mistake." DC is in at Pitt, and thought UMD was a safety... Now awaiting a bunch of RD decisions from more selective schools. Good news is that they really liked Pitt. (Parents are just mad that the in-state school rejected our kid, with those stats.)

The best quote I heard from a UMD admissions officer during info sessions was "that it was the University of MARYLAND not MCPS." There are just soooo many highly qualified students from MCPS that it is ridiculously competitive to be accepted. Also, people are not reporting if their kid applied to a limited enrollment program. Several years ago my neighbor was mad that UMD rejected his kid (who ended up taking a full ride to CivE at Alabama). Turns out the kid was admitted to UMD, just not into the engineering LEP. It may be that UMD is now just rejecting kids that aren't admitted to the LEP because they mostly end up not attending anyway.

UMD does not care about yield or demonstrated interest. I have found that it is a tough admit from high performing maryland high schools.

+1 it's a tough admit for in state students, especially for MCPS students.

Some admissions person at UMD once said, "This is not the University of Montgomery County"... if they went purely by grades/scores, the school would be mostly made up of MCPS students.

Hopefully you have applied to UMBC, Towson, etc? No reason to go to Pitt over those instate MD schools unless Pitt gave great merit

dp.. depending on the major would UMBC even be better than Pitt? I don't know that much about Pitt.
