I don’t think UMD yield protects? I’d reach out to your counselor on Monday to see if error. Has your DC had any other decisions yet?

+1 not yield protection according to Naviance (MCPS HS) and what I'm seeing on Facebook groups. No evidence of kids denied with those stats. That is shocking. Sorry OP. I would check with HS counselor. Issues with rec form or other teacher recommendations? Essay?

Are you joking? Check with counselor? Oh there must be an error!! Where have you all been the past few years. High stats kids get rejected from all places. This is not new.

I’ve studied Naviance extensively and monitored the various forums. Something is not right on this one.

Now awaiting a bunch of RD decisions from more selective schools. Good news is that they really liked Pitt. (Parents are just mad that the in-state school rejected our kid, with those stats.)

Do check. There could be an error. No downside.

Did your kid take the AP exams? It would be interesting to determine whether UMD cares about AP exam scores. My kid with similar stats reported his exam scores and got into Honors.

That is great!!!! My son is in smith and loves it.

Thank you so much!! Can you tell me what he loves about Smith? We went on the admissions tour at UMD, but frankly, we don't know a lot about Smith yet except that it's highly ranked.

We will be weighing it against less expensive, lower-ranked business options that also seem pretty great including WVU Chambers, Miami University Farmer, and Salisbury Perdue. I think we can now eliminate the more expensive options (Loyola Maryland Sellinger, CNU Luter, and JMU).

So funny, us too. DC accepted to Pitt and really liked it - just wanted to be closer to home. The school spirit was remarkable and impressive.

I don't blame you but it really is a crapshoot these days.

Hopefully you have applied to UMBC, Towson, etc? No reason to go to Pitt over those instate MD schools unless Pitt gave great merit

dp.. depending on the major would UMBC even be better than Pitt? I don't know that much about Pitt.

If stem, then maybe. But Pitt is great and glad your kid liked. I hope they get merit at Pitt. Best of luck to your kid.

Sorry to hear. Agree. Probably Yield protection. Wishing your DC good luck for top schools. Does your DC already have few acceptances from top schools?

Ridiculous that your kid was rejected. So sorry. There is some other higher plan but bit that stinks now.

FCPS accepted to same programs. Parents are thrilled!! I actually wouldn't mind paying some more if DS would be fortunate enough to have to make among UMD/UVA/W&M.

What were your kid's AP scores? What HS and what is the unweighted GPA.

Yeah. UMD CS is a great school!

Updating this. He did not get in.

Ah well. It’s nice that he will get to go somewhere with merit

Now that your student is in, may I ask, why test optional with that GPA? Can't be a covid/testing center issue at this point.

The advice we saw on online forums was not to submit if the test scores don't "match" the GPA. U/W GPA of 4.0 included 6 AP, 3 dual enrollment, and multiple high-school honors classes, so the rigor was there. Excellent essay, leadership, job experience, community service, and ECs.

The student has ADHD and does not perform well on standardized tests (max was 1290), but works very hard for good grades and is a strong writer. Even with an A in every AP class, all AP scores were only 3s or 4s. The student did not want the SAT to be the reason for rejection. An SAT of 1300 is about 87th percentile nationally, but probably far below the average test score of admitted UMD freshmen, especially in a limited enrollment program like Smith.

Instead of investing time and money into extended test prep, we invested in ECs/sports, volunteer opportunities, and many hours on essay editing/revision.

Sound strategy / approach. Glad it worked out. Congrats!
