The score is a bit low, APs are few, maybe the essay wasn't great... yes, she SHOULD have been admitted to UMD any other year than 2022, but this year admit rate is 34%, and admissions officers felt differently, and to be honest, this is not a "high stats" kid. |
Inflated by test optional as is the case at all schools. |
^ That's true. If all kids has to submit test scores, the 75% per event Ike would not be a 1510 (definitely would be lower). What was it in 2019? |
I just looked this up. For the fall 2020 class, the 25th percentile was 1300, 75th was 1470 and average was 1375. People should keep this in mind in deciding whether to submit test scores. I highly doubt that Md is suddenly attracting a different level of candidate - it just looks that way due to test-optional. |
I don’t understand why people keep saying that a high 1400 score is low. If 75% is 1510 than a 1480 or whatever it was is not why she wasn’t accepted. I don’t know what the reason was and I don’t know anything else about her or her application. But it wasn’t the SAT score. |
What was the unweighted GPA? That is a better determining factor with grade inflation. |
Absolutely. It’s a very strong score for UMD and almost anyone with that score and this poster’s grades is accepted. Something else is the issue. |
+1 With those stats they would make any initial cut off for acceptance, next they would look at the supporting documentation to see if this student fits the class they are building. Without knowing more about the LOR's supplemental answers or essay its not an answer we can figure out. |
It could well be that after factoring in the balancing of counties, school, school system, races, gender, or others that someone gets left out.
If you're the 151st best applicant from magnet school A and they decided to take 150 from there...well... |
Every year, there are a few stories like this. It's upsetting to the student and family, but no explanation why it happens. |
On the other hand, with a acceptance rate of ~35, that means the rate for MD applicants is probably notably higher, maybe closer to 45 or 50%..I don't know if any appeals process even exists but (if it does) you could ask if you are truly a high-roller who got denied and suspect there was maybe an error of some sort.
They may simply tell you all decisions are final however. |
Acceptance rate at our high school seems to be around 50% every year. You can see in Naviance that there is a general cut off with very few outliers. |
Been there! Amazing stats - and I'm sure wonderful kids, too. That doesn't just happen...they must have terrific parents! Hope your kids are feeling a little better now that it's been a week or so. Best of luck with RD applications. That's when my kids received all of their good news. Worth a read: https://raisingamericans.substack.com/p/deferred-or-rejected-by-a-dream-school |

How does the FB group know this? Was data released by the school? |
