DeSantis Wants to Takeover Progressive College

Isn’t it fair to say, putting politics and ideology aside, that it really IS true that the school has struggled in recent years? While most good schools - and nearly all Florida state schools - have seen applications and admissions standard skyrocket, things have been stagnant / declining at NCF for years. Few students who are qualified for admission to top schools now are seriously considering NCF. UF’s standards are much higher now than NCF’s and historically it was the opposite.

I’m not saying that admissions standards are the be all and end all, but they do serve as a proxy for how a school is progressing. And with NCF being a state school and with a state’s budget being limited, why isn’t it fair for the state to take a look at what it might do to make NCF more competitive in the educational marketplace?

That's a a good point, BUT is it really what he is doing here? Looking at academic standards? This does not seem to be the case at all; he doesn't give a crap about Florida academics. He is pandering to his base with things like the Stop Woke Act.

Exactly. He is only interested in getting publicity for these efforts in order to further his own political career.

Asserting they are overreacting and that would not impact the student experience and then applauding this.

I think the sad part is that the school will likely fail. The goal is to turn it into something the current students would hate and thus drive them out and I don’t see a huge demand for the kind of school it is with a reactionary conservative bent.

You don't need a huge demand, just enough to fill the classes.

Who is going to teach these classes? The current faculty aren't sticking around.

Given how colleges around the country go against professors with right leaning views, denying tenure, etc., I think they would be able to get lots of professors.
I thought Mike Adams was writing parody columns, and then I found out he was telling the truth about his experiences, at one of the UNC colleges.

The school will be flooded with applications from professors.

I thought that I heard that Governor DeSantis wanted to transform New College into a Hillsdale College of the South. If this occurs, New College will double its enrollment in a year while decreasing its admit rate drastically.

Funny how no one cared about New College just a few weeks ago...

“DeSantis’s administration has said that Hillsdale College, a private Christian college in Michigan, could be a model for what New College could become. That hasn’t been well received by some students, parents and alumni.”

Might be the topics that Hillsdale focuses on that are a draw?

Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science; MA in Classical Education—Graduate School of Education; MA and PhD in Politics—Van Andel Graduate School of Statesmanship; MA in Government—Van Andel Graduate School of Government

He's going to "bring in his team" and abolish "diversity, equity and inclusion" to be replaced with "equality, merit, and colorblindness."

Sounds good to me. If only more schools would do the same.

+2

EMC!!

We want EMC!

I have been aware of New College for a couple of decades. Unfortunately, it is tough to take this school seriously even though referred to as an honors college. It is better described as a druggie funfest.

I cared. My kid applied. He won't be attending. I'll take my (full pay) dollars elsewhere.

Is he into druggie funfests, per PP above?

Indeed, the vast majority of Floridians will be thrilled with some balance.

It would be great if DeSantis's appointees were actually able to turn it into an *actual* honors college, worthy of the distinction.

Not if his agenda is Christo Nationalism.

Not if his agenda is being a dictator!

OMG. Do you even hear yourself? You're insane. No one takes people like you seriously.

No, he's into philosophy, sociology and computer science. He's interested in finding ways that the online environment can be shaped to produce more prosocial behavior. He doesn't drink or do drugs. He's a quiet, serious curious kid that wants a more laid back environment.

You should take the idea of Christian Nationalism very seriously. Many of the people involved in January 6 were driven by that idea. There's a good chunk of the Republican base that takes it very seriously. DeSantis is perfectly happy to embrace that movement in order to be president.

Honestly, this is not a good measure of quality. For anything. Signed, a Floridian
