New College is the honors college of Florida, and its progressive education and approach to life is on the verge of being squashed by DeSantis and his cronies. Sad. |
|
He wants to do what all authoritarians want, destablize and stigmatize education and knowledge.
Authoritarians need their adherents to be fat and stupid. |
| If more than 90% of the colleges are controlled by liberals (many of them are very liberal), almost no conservatives are allowed or can take right wing positions in these colleges, what's wrong with a tiny number of colleges to turn conservative? If you do not admit that liberals have taken over colleges across US, you are delusional and do not live in reality. Same thing for news media. Everything needs something to balance in search for truth. |
I mean, the anti-intellectual conservatives made their bed. They’ve spend the last two decades shi**ing on higher education, yucking it up over the tired “gender studies” and “lesbian basket weaving” jokes and convincing their base that going to college is only for the smug liberal elite. Why is anyone surprised that universities are now mostly progressive? Not our fault the republicans want their people dumb. Can’t have your cake and eat it too. |
|
There are absolutely conservatives at colleges. Many at high levels, making decisions.
They just aren’t FAR right, so they feel liberal to the extremists like DeSantis. |
That’s a compelling argument for affirmative action for conservatives. Congrats. |
100% |
If one side can have it, so can the other. |
And governments dictating to private institutions. Conservatives really have no principles anymore. |
| Most colleges & universities are very undemocratic institutions anyway. Students & faculty do not get to elect the university president and have little say in policies. |
Part of the reason we are where we are is the systemic attack on education and critical thinking that conservatives stepped up in the 1980s. |
There are designated "Honors Colleges?" |
Typically, Honors Colleges are part of a large public university--even in Florida. But Florida also has two stand-alone Honors Colleges = New College & Wilkes Honors College (separate campus of a large Florida public university). New College is ultra liberal. |
| It’s a tiny struggling public liberal arts college with an almost non-existent endowment. The governor has every right to step in |
| Colleges don’t discriminate against “conservatives.” Conservatives think “free speech” means “free from social/professional consequences” because they don’t actually care what it says in the constitution. |
