It’s not over. He is not a doctor, just an irresponsible politician who has access to far better medical care than the rest of us.

Of course it is. Deaths and hospitalizations have stabilized. This is simply what it looks like for covid to be endemic.

Of course it isn't. What's over is the free money gravy train. Although the covid pandemic is over from a policy POV, I believe this just means millions in covid money won't be available to fund MCPS pet projects.

In the past year covid variants have been mild, but it's too early to take a victory lap. A single recombinant variant can put the hospitalization numbers back on the boards overnight.

https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-variant-data

I hope covid is not really endemic. That means its just a matter of time before the next wave of covid variant, and the next, and next..

I’m not sure what you mean. I get that you could argue that we don’t really know if we’re quite at endemic levels yet. But certainly covid will become endemic, and we have every reason to expect endemic covid case rates will significantly exceed endemic flu rates. Given vaccines and past infection have remained effective at preventing severe illness in new variants, we can expect that will generally continue.

It is also about transmission.

Temporary measures like masking, distancing and closures cannot have a sustained effect. Once they are stopped, cases would spike until the equilibrium is reached again. At this point it makes no sense to continue mitigations that we're not prepared to maintain indefinitely. You might be willing to mask indefinitely, but I'm sure you realize most people are not.

We have not had closures in over a year. Masking and distancing are basic precautions. It sucks some of us don’t get the luxury of sending our kids in person because of people like you.

If in your mind school isn’t safe now, then it was never safe during flu season.

When/how does this end for you? As I said before, masks and distancing don’t have a lasting effect. Before we had vaccines, there was some logic to the idea that we wanted to buy time until the vaccines came out. Masking and distancing weren’t intended to be permanent. There’s nothing to buy time for anymore. We already have vaccines and treatments.

Flu is not comparable and vaccines don’t stop transmission which is what I care about. And, not everyone has access to treatments. I was declined when I had Covid.

We are currently living in the new normal. That's just how it's going to be.

I'm pretty sure the other PP’s new normal looks an awful lot like Kathy Bates's character in Misery. Unfortunately, her kids seem to be playing James Caan's role.

You didn’t answer the question. In your mind, what would masks and distancing be buying time for, given that there aren’t significantly more effective vaccines or treatments on the horizon? Or are you saying you want indefinite masking and distancing?

It doesn't matter what is on the horizon, it matters what we have now. I am saying I want masking and distancing now as this current variant is much more contegous. You are fortunate you don't have health issues or fortunate you have good medical care. Not everyone does.

How are you proposing they distance? Hybrid with concurrent? Fortunately, you’re an army of one (or very few).

Got any data to support that assertion?

There are new types of vaccines at varying stages of research and development that many hope will provide better protection. But there is no data supporting any estimates of potential efficacy, nor are any far enough along to have a credible estimate of approval/availability.

It is under control. You just don’t like what under control means. It doesn't mean low numbers of cases. There are tens of millions of flu and other respiratory illnesses every winter, yet we don't talk about those being out of control. "Under control" means serious outcomes have stabilized. And they have for covid.

Regardless, you're free to mask as long as you want. But obviously most people are going to make a different choice for themselves.

If that's true, that "it is under control", then there will be enough bus drivers and teachers this year - right?

If in your mind school isn’t safe now, then it was never safe during flu season.

When/how does this end for you? As I said before, masks and distancing don’t have a lasting effect. Before we had vaccines, there was some logic to the idea that we wanted to buy time until the vaccines came out. Masking and distancing weren’t intended to be permanent. There’s nothing to buy time for anymore. We already have vaccines and treatments.

Flu is not comparable and vaccines don’t stop transmission which is what I care about. And, not everyone has access to treatments. I was declined when I had Covid.

You can't always get what you want. (but if you try real hard you'll get what you need-xanax).

He’s not wrong.

There *are* significantly more effective vaccines on the horizon.

How does that help us now? When will they be released? It is zero help now so it is irrelevant. I want masking now till it is under control.

Ugg, you again. You just can't wait until this happens. I wouldn't hold your breath. Actually maybe you should.

That depends on how many subs and bus drivers they’ve been able to recruit. “Stabilize” doesn’t mean returning to pre-pandemic levels. The baseline level of illness will be permanently higher. We have all the illnesses as before, plus covid.

Since deep down your soul is full of hate ("I wouldn't hold your breath. Actually maybe you should.") as long as you're a parent who doesn't work for MCPS, I won't take it personally.

But if you do work for MCPS, you really should find a new line of work. Honestly, you shouldn't be around children. Just sayin'.
