We're off to a rocky start to the new school year.

On Monday, 157 students and 22 staff new infections were reported, with 1,143 infections from of about 174K (160K students plus 14K staff). If you recall from last year, it took a few weeks to reach this type of new infection rate per school (see data below) during the January spike. It is likely that lax school sanitization / distancing / masking, etc. (if occurring at all) is a significant contributing factor.

I don't see my school and we have several confirmed cases in each class on our grade level and numerous suspected cases.

Yeah, I knew you wouldn’t be happy with the case numbers. You were obviously hoping for far more. You’ll just have to cheer harder for the virus. Otherwise you might not be able to stop yourself from feeling bad about keeping your kids trapped at home all this time.

If the new case numbers were below 5, didn't include those schools. Looking for trends of sufficient numbers of infections that could balloon. Ex. when you have 20 infected people at the same time, far more likely to infect others than only 2 or 3. Normally I would look for the number of infections at a particular school, but MCPS stopped publishing daily rates by school as historical data (ex. PDF's). They also spend a significant amount of effort in ensuring parents don't download or copy their data. You can prove this statement yourself. Try to copy out the MCPS covid dashboard information by school. You'll see they've restricted the data so that you can't copy out the info all at once through normal means.

Although, that is a weakness. If the IT shop is being told to hide the data, they could open themselves up to liability, I would think? Some clever investigator or attorney might get the idea to talk to them one of these days on some other topic. Given how they handled the covid dashboard, I'm sure there are a lot more skeletons stacked.

No one is trapped. We now know how to keep our families safe. COVID is airborne and a simple mask does the trick.
We care about humanity and the world is still in a pandemic. Sadly our children have learned that there are soulless people who don’t care about others. They see this as those people spread covid and ignore the disabled and dying. They see it as the planet is in peril from global warming and pollution. They see it as the privileged of Montgomery County trample on the people in service professions. Let them eat cake is the motto of those that step over the suck and dying.

Same. I’m basing this on parent emails and not the nurse’s emails. Evidently, parents are not telling the nurse when their kids test positive on the weekend.

Mask does not do the trick. Most got covid wearing while a mask. I did not wear a face diaper for all of 2022 and most of 2021. I got covid once and it was more mild than the cold I caught last year. Seriously. Got a shot. Go to work. Go to school. It really is that easy.

I have it right now and it is awful. Wouldn’t wish this on anyone. Got it from my kid who got it at school. Masking, ventilation, and distance does help.
