Most of the learning loss was because these same parents didn't monitor their kids or make sure they did the work.

Yeah, those deadbeat parents that can't speak English, or don't know how to work ParentVue, or have to work 2 jobs to put food on those table...

Stop blaming those parents when its the rich ones who are screaming about learning loss. A certain percentage have never done well at school.

They slowed down and cut back curriculum. You needed to do outside enrichment programs if you wanted a proper education.

You've always needed to do outside supplementing or enrichment even before covid. Be real. They slowed down some things but we monitored the basics like math and ours did almost all of it. However, the issue is kids weren't attending and doing the work.

He’s not wrong.

It’s not over. He is not a doctor, just an irresponsible politician who has access to far better medical care than the rest of us.

Of course it is. Deaths and hospitalizations have stabilized. This is simply what it looks like for covid to be endemic.

Of course it isn't. What's over is the free money gravy train. Although the covid pandemic is over from a policy POV, I believe this just means millions in covid money won't be available to fund MCPS pet projects.

In the past year covid variants have been mild, but it's too early to take a victory lap. A single recombinant variant can put the hospitalization numbers back on the boards overnight.

I hope covid is not really endemic. That means its just a matter of time before the next wave of covid variant, and the next, and next..

I’m not sure what you mean. I get that you could argue that we don’t really know if we’re quite at endemic levels yet. But certainly covid will become endemic, and we have every reason to expect endemic covid case rates will significantly exceed endemic flu rates. Given vaccines and past infection have remained effective at preventing severe illness in new variants, we can expect that will generally continue.

Temporary measures like masking, distancing and closures cannot have a sustained effect. Once they are stopped, cases would spike until the equilibrium is reached again. At this point it makes no sense to continue mitigations that we're not prepared to maintain indefinitely. You might be willing to mask indefinitely, but I'm sure you realize most people are not.

Temporary measures like masking, distancing and closures have been stopped for months now.

For good reason. Like PP indicated, they're useless.

I think you missed my point. the PP was blaming learning loss on the parents for not engaging with their child during virtual learning

I said 'deadbeat' sarcastically. Those parents are obviously not deadbeat parents.

It's just an easy excuse for the pro-lockdown crowd to blame the parents so they can still feel good about themselves.

Even though they ruined the future for millions of kids

We have not had closures in over a year. Masking and distancing are basic precautions. It sucks some of us don’t get the luxury of sending our kids in person because of people like you.

If you're still talking about social distancing, you really have no shot at any of this.

If in your mind school isn’t safe now, then it was never safe during flu season.

When/how does this end for you? As I said before, masks and distancing don’t have a lasting effect. Before we had vaccines, there was some logic to the idea that we wanted to buy time until the vaccines came out. Masking and distancing weren’t intended to be permanent. There’s nothing to buy time for anymore. We already have vaccines and treatments.

Flu is not comparable and vaccines don’t stop transmission which is what I care about. And, not everyone has access to treatments. I was declined when I had Covid.

You didn’t answer the question. In your mind, what would masks and distancing be buying time for, given that there aren’t significantly more effective vaccines or treatments on the horizon? Or are you saying you want indefinite masking and distancing?
