The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally-funded, state-administered program run by the USDA. SFSP reimburses program operators who serve free healthy meals and snacks to children and teens in low-income areas. In Fairfax County, any child under the age of 18 can visit one of the food distribution sites and get a free lunch. Private school kids, homeschooled kids, FCPS kids, "illegal" kids. You just show up so a child who lives in Maryland or DC could show up at one of the sites and get their free food.

FCPS has been providing free breakfast to all students for at least five years. I can't remember when it started. In our elementary school, the breakfast was delivered to the classrooms in the morning and there was enough for every student in the class. In the middle and high school, if the student wanted breakfast, they would go into the cafeteria and get it. The last couple of years, every student in the county has been able to get free lunch as well. In the past, the family had to fill out paperwork every year to qualify for free and reduced lunch prices. I believe this coming school year, they are going back to requiring paperwork.

Yes. The Supreme Court ruled in Pyler v Doe that children have a right to a free public education regardless of status. The summer meals program is free to all (the nature of the program with kids showing up often by themselves to sites would make it hard to certify or vet kids). Schools that have switched to a local area benefit do not need to individually certify for meals. Got anything else? Every eaten a free summer meal?

I wonder if the Roberts' Court will reverse this Pyler case. Stare decisis is dead.

Yes, actually I have. When Terry McAuliffe was the governor of Virginia, our Title I elementary school (very High FARMS/poverty) started offering a free summer lunch for children and a small fee for adults - I think it was around $2.00. They were actually grilling burgers and hot dogs. So I took my three children to the school one day, bought myself a $2 a lunch and the boys got a free lunch. If I remember correctly, it included the burger/hot dog, a piece of fruit and a carton of milk. No, it was not a gourmet meal. But for someone who needed food, it wasn't awful.

Gin, I have to ask...why bother trying to sneak/smuggle in if the borders are so open and policies are so welcoming? By that logic, people should just be able to walk right over and get welfare checks immediately.

There is never any talk about accountability for the governments of the countries where these people are coming from. They are the ones who should be feeling shame that they are not providing a safe environment where their citizens can prosper and not be driven to migrate.

The only leader that has taken accountability is Nayib Bukele of El Salvador who stepped up after that horrible accident where the father and his daughter drowned in the Rio Grande trying to cross. Bukele made it a point to say publicly that El Salvador is at fault for driving them to migrate.

Maybe, but I’m not sure it would work. The undocumented immigrants in our neighborhood have a pretty laid-back approach to school.

More likely, what would happen, is that the parents would keep the kids home from school. And use the older kids to watch the younger ones while they work, or get the kids involved in jobs young.

The kids are already victims (no choice - parents bring them here because the parents want to make more money). Keeping them out of school will make their situation even worse.

Crack down on employers. Crack down on illegal rentals. Quit offering free food/healthcare/backpacks/clothes/laptops/language lessons to every single undocumented immigrant adult and child. But don’t keep the kids out of schools.

Montgomery County basically now has an entire ‘underground’ economy based on cash. Illegal rentals have proliferated. Landlords are making a killing. They buy SFHs and put in multiple boarders, who pay in cash. Landlord has no rental license, pays no taxes, etc. and often funnels the money overseas.

Lots of people driving without any auto insurance.

Being an undocumented immigrant in a sanctuary county is quite appealing and there are lots of ways MoCo makes it incredibly welcoming.

So sick of all the uninsured cars and hit & run accident culture in Georgia Avenue. They literally run out of the vehicle after crashing, just like in Central America. Me no driving!
