what a bargain

Compared to my SLAC at $90k, it is!

Not bad, but NC State costs thousands less for in-state residents.

So everyone that gets in now a top-notch athlete?

Everyone that gets in now is a top-notch student.

At our FCPS HS it appears the "second" notch. No NMSF, academic award winners, club presidents etc. Just good students that make honor roll for the most part...and ED.

You reviewed the entire application for every kid going to VT in your school?

It "appears" is not an extensive review nor all encompassing. Information on NMSF (press and school), award winners (press and school), club presidents (school and social media) and choice of school (school and social media) is readily available.

Anecdotes don’t really suggest what you’re claiming.

Through various sources: HS communication, newspapers, yearbook, social media and year end senior newsletter, it would not appear the top notch students from my kids' school attend VT. Just an observation. No need to be offended.

College admissions decisions are based off information found in yearbooks?

Leadership and awards.

The yearbook lists an extensive resume for each student?

Exactly. So lame. That PP doesn’t know anything about those students.

The PP who is obsessively stalking other people’s kids to determine who is “top-notch” reminds me so much of a mom I know. She brags constantly about her kid’s awards, and was absolutely floored when she asked where my kid was going to college and I told her. She had zero clue about all of the accomplishments my kid has - both inside and outside of school. Pretty sure she had written my kid off as “average” years ago because I never discuss her accomplishments with anyone but family.

What is with these busybodies who purport to know anything at all about other people’s children? So insecure.

If you are a VA resident, and your kid got into VA Tech engineering but declined so as to go elsewhere, why and where did they end up?
Anonymous
DC declined for a better ranked engineering program and full ride.

We know a few that went to UVA. My DS chose Michigan over Tech. One of his friends is transferring over from Tech to Michigan. Also know one other kid that transferred into Tech from elsewhere (don't recall where from, but it was a higher ranked university).

They do talk a lot about service in all their info sessions and have a question about how the student will contribute. DC has a ton of meaningful service (stopped counting after 150 hours) and I think that really helped. Plus the weighted 4.3- FCPS- 7 APs (including 3 maths and 2 science), and a 1490. Plus, a female in math/science is always good and the school of science takes a higher percentage of students. Something like 65% but don’t quote me, DCUM people.

What on earth does that have to do with this thread?

New poster here. Let’s be fair and rational about this. Yes, there are students at the very top of the class in FCPS who choose VT. But there are many more who choose UVA, William & Mary, OOS flagships, and top privates. Tech is not a typical destination for very top students - except maybe engineering.

How do you know who is very top? How do you know colleges agree with your assessment of who is very top?

Honestly, my experience isn’t current. But in the past local newspapers and the Washington Post would publish lists of the many, many valedictorians from area high schools and the colleges they chose. You wouldn’t see a lot of Techs listed. Admittedly unscientific, but no doubt the case.

And c’mon, we all know that in the DMV the top students aren’t gunning for Tech, and in NOVA in particular the Golden Ticket has long been UVA.
