Here's the VT common data set. Lots of data to look at in terms of gpa and test scores vs major.

It seems like over the last couple of years, if you really want to go to VT you need to apply ED.

From this data it appears that being from out of state helps tremendously.

Yes, much higher admit rate because OOS yield is low. VT gives very little aid so it's pretty expensive for OOS.

Yes, according to this, my DS (white) has a 26% chance in state for engineering and a 72% if out of state. Curious to know this year's data.

Can a white male with a 1250 SAT get in?

And not necessarily be an engineering or CS major

This is fantastic, thank you. This is when DCUM is so helpful. I didn’t know about common data sets a couple of weeks ago. I hadn’t yet gotten to VT’s set.

So much easier to navigate than some other schools, so I guess you can see why they have such a good technical program!

I have a daughter interested in engineering. She has a 4.0 UW GPA (still a sophomore so that theoretically could change but knowing her it will be pretty close - not by any pressure from me) but no APs and lots of ECs, and she’s not like the founder of a charity that develops prosthetics for 3-legged corgis or whatever DCUM thinks you need to do to get into college. The acceptance rates for girls is 71% for Engineering and I’ve found in some common data sets that the rate for girls even increases for what she’s interested in doing, which is Civil or Mechanical.

I wish I’d had access to this when I was applying. I got into VT for Mechanical (went for CS somewhere else) and always wondered how I got in…..I assumed it was because I was a girl and now I know!

Certainly can. Apply ED if possible.

I don't think they care about SAT. What are the other stats?

Service to others is very important to VT admissions.

VT is test optional, but not test blind. A high score will be considered and thus of some value, although not nearly as much as several other factors.

Only if not engineering and URM or first generation

A 1250 is bottom 25th of class. And they said white male. A 1250 is not going to get you into engineering. The bottom of the class usually is reserved for the hooked students, which includes URMs and first-generations -which is what Tim Sands wants right now.

Give it a rest. Your assumption that the bottom of the class must be URM or first gen students is racist BS. Va Tech undergrad population is 65% White, 10% Asian, & 6.8% international.

I love you PP for posting this. This is what it feels like. Thanks for making me laugh this morning.

+1
That's the same troll who *loves* to parrot the URM/1st gen garbage.

The one thing that really seems to matter most above all else is the answers to the supplemental essays. It’s really the one best place to differentiate yourself. As well as demonstrated interest.

BTDT with a kid with a 3.7 1150 SAT who was admitted (non-engineering). The VT admissions officer for her school (Loudoun public) said it was her essays that made the difference.

She was deferred in the ED round and accepted in the EA round.
