FCPS Masking Update

So let fcps drop this nonsense now that metrics are good. Express joy in the good news and take a positive, nonjudgmental attitude.

Should be easy— if it’s about the kids and not throwing a tantrum to prove a point.

But he didn’t just remove mask mandate for now. He banned them forever. So stupid and shortsighted and such political pandering.

How so? The incompetence of the local SB's last year resulted in Youngkin. Everything that is happening now can be traced back to last year's SB stupidity.

People should have been able to vote beyond a local situation for one year during a novel pandemic with no national leadership to guide. Supporting people who think parental opt out is a good way to run public health is beyond stupid.

Pretty sure he can still impose a mandate if public health warrants it. I think if he had to, he would but it would apply to everyone and probably be accompanied by some more severe lock down emergency measures. But, right now none of that is happening and yet several school boards has no intention of dropping masks. And whether the pro-maskers like to admit it or not, masks are helping and are impeding development. And don’t say it isn’t because we don’t have a control for 18 months of masking kids. If someone proposed such a study they would be called cruel and abusive.

Pp here. Masks are NOT helping!!!

Youngkin will never do it — in person school is not safe in his hands.

Are you really not able to understand the distinction between the CT and VA approaches? FCPS would unmask soon enough -- Omicron cases are in steep decline -- but Virginia made it impossible to reinstate mask mandates when future variants may necessitate it. Parental opt out is not a scientific basis to decide public health measures; it's pure politics.

I applaude McKay for his letter. The loud voices on DCUM to the contrary, most of us in Fairfax are educated enough to understand that the way the General Assembly and Youngkin approached this is pure stupidity.

Fwiw, Fairfax county is lower (new cases) than every county in CT. They are close, but we are lower. They made a decision to stop masking on Feb 28. Youngkin created a lot of drama by trying to stop mask mandates on Jan 15 in the height of a crushing covid wave. But if Youngkin had made masks optional at end of Feb, he would have been seen as moderate. Youngkin created drama, and FCPS added to it by rigidly clinging to CDC standards that are out of date.

I feel like a child of divorced parents who both play games, and the kid is stuck in the middle.

No the drama was created by people like you. Because Republicans 😱

Now you and your dumb lawsuit you praised just look idiotic.

Yes they are. FCPS has done great this year. Just because you read it on Twitter or FB doesn’t make it true.

No. The lawsuit was necessary to buy time so the cases could come down. The "dumb" thing was the EO. The other "dumb" thing was FCPS's off ramp plan.

Both were wrong for the times. But mask-optional now, is right for the times.

It seems to me he is more worried about what teachers' unions think than parents and kids. But there are more parents and kids than teachers.

He is just a party shrill. I literally can’t believe the northern VA Ds are doubling down and don’t have the self awareness to realize it was their errors that gave us Youngkin.

Fun fact: for these people in the “non-partisan” positions to get on the Democrat sample ballot, they have to get past the gatekeepers in FCDC. FCDC is losing their minds over the mask thing and also recently implemented an ideological purity test for members and pushed some people out they decided weren’t with them enough. McKay knows he has to get on that blue sample ballot, because that’s what drives about 60% of Fairfax voters. The loons in charge of FCDC bring you this junk.

If Fairfax GOP had a chance to be in charge they’d be no better. Our local party orgs are insane. We need people not backed by them, but that’s a pipe dream.

I am considering running as an independent for school board but I hate people and I don’t have time.

If you don't get his newsletters, you should, just to know what's going on.

I will allow him this one poor choice (letter). He's normally pretty moderate and good for Fairfax, but this position is so out of touch...like FCPS.

No / his last email was bad too!!! This is his second one in a row.

Maybe the answer is to have an independent group that is not affiliated. A parent ballot.

Independent Fairfax

I would join an independent fairfax school board group.
