Maybe Jared Polis for the Democrats and Joe Lombardo for the Republicans, if someone born in Japan on a U.S. military base is eligible to run for president.

I don’t think that Trump or his voters are that conservative. About half of his voters like him mainly because he knows how to convey the impression that he’s down to earth and candid about what matters. Lombardo is actually candid and down-to-earth, and he can make the case that he’s been tough on crime, as sheriff, in a non-crazy way.

Most other Republican governors come off as fake or flaky, and they’ll filter out in the debates.

Who?

I think you are going to have to pick someone that a decent amount of Americans can pick out of a lineup. I had to google Lombardo. He was elected governor 5 seconds ago. No one knows who he is.

Polis might be able to make a case if Biden doesn't run and the Dems don't hand the nomination to Kamala, neither of which I hold out a lot of hope for. But I think you'd be lucky if 3 out of 20 people in any major city in America (other than Denver or DC) could tell you who Jared Polis is.

I bet the same could have been said of Bill Clinton in January 1991.

Well, yeah. That's why I said he could have a shot. Bill Clinton was a generational political talent and still was a long shot. He benefited from unique circumstances during that election cycle - the belief that a Bush second term was a lock so many prominent national Dems sat out and of course candidate Ross Perot who really delivered the White House to him.

I've posted this in number of threads, but it's a myth that Perot split the Republican vote. If you look at exit polling, the percentage of people who would have voted for Bush if Perot was not an option was exactly the same as the percentage of people who would have voted for Clinton if Perot was not an option. Given that, Clinton would have defeated Bush even without Perot.

Haley seems unlikely to win a MAGA primary, but maybe her long game is to attack Trump (taking some of the heat away from DeSantis), endorse DeSantis and finally become his running mate.

That'd be great.

We need more governors are fewer bullsh1tters ahem senators.

I would vote from Romney, Hogan or Baker in a heartbeat in ‘24.

You're not getting that opportunity. None of them will be the nominee.

Those 3 are essentially Bill Clinton (minus the sex).

Which makes me think. Would Bill Clinton be a GOP governor today?

No. The anomaly is that those three are Republicans. They should be Democrats.

The reality is that it is almost certain Joe Biden will be the nominee. And if he doesn’t run for health reasons, Kamala Harris is guaranteed to get the nomination. I wouldn’t waste any time or energy fantasizing about someone else.

PP here. Would also vote for Condi Rice.

If you take Trump out of the equation then I think Haley has a good shot. People love DeSantis for his whole flamethrower schtick, but DeSantis hasn't had to "perform" on a national stage yet. His press is pretty tightly controlled. Remains to be seen if he can have the same success if he has to face national press.

I think Haley is auditioning for the VP slot.

Haley could be a great VP candidate (certainly better than Harris), but Logan and DeSantis have much more substance and solid track record. Both have performed well during difficult times in swing/ moderate states.

Exactly. If Biden runs, which he says he's doing, no one is going to even challenge him.

Then he'll lose.
