2024 Republican Nominees

Anonymous
My bet is that both major party nominees will be governors.

Maybe Jared Polis for the Democrats and Joe Lombardo for the Republicans, if someone born in Japan on a U.S. military base is eligible to run for president.

I don’t think that Trump or his voters are that conservative. About half of his voters like him mainly because he knows how to convey the impression that he’s down to earth and candid about what matters. Lombardo is actually candid and down-to-earth, and he can make the case that he’s been tough on crime, as sheriff, in a non-crazy way.

Most other Republican governors come off as fake or flaky, and they’ll filter out in the debates.

Love Jared Polis. Lombardo is not experienced enough IMO. But John McCain was born in Panama on a U.S. military base and that was OK, so it should be OK for Lombardo.

I think the santos situation has taught us that no one is going to verify or enforce these constitutional qualification requirements anyway.

I’ve actually wondered this about Elon Musk who is actually not eligible. Would Republicans actually keep him off of state ballots if he wanted to run as a Republican?

What an inspiring lineup

I don't know the answer to this - is Tim Scott as awful as the rest of them?

Tim Scott was cooperating with Cory Booker putting together a policing reform bill when hardly any other Republicans would touch the issue. This bill went nowhere, but that’s the only thing I’ve seen that differentiates him from the rest.

The bill went nowhere because of Democrats. Just FYI.

No it went no where because Scott tanked it over qualified immunity.

No, it went nowhere because Democrats insisted on adding elements that would defund law enforcement.

Natural born American citizens include those born in a foreign country to American citizen parents. Both McCain and Lombardo qualify, as do many Americans.

"The term natural born citizen applies to the child of at least one parent who is an American citizen. Children whose parents are American citizens are not required to be naturalized because they are natural born citizens. Therefore, they are eligible to serve as president, even if they are born in a foreign country."

It was a funding bill. They don’t defund things.

Who?

I think you are going to have to pick someone that a decent amount of Americans can pick out of a lineup. I had to google Lombardo. He was elected governor 5 seconds ago. No one knows who he is.

Polis might be able to make a case if Biden doesn't run and the Dems don't hand the nomination to Kamala, neither of which I hold out a lot of hope for. But I think you'd be lucky if 3 out of 20 people in any major city in America (other than Denver or DC) could tell you who Jared Polis is.

I bet the same could have been said of Bill Clinton in January 1991.
