Same, except I’m in Rockville. I was downstairs at 6 and there was barely a dusting of snow. Now my backyard looks like a winter wonderland. The roads haven’t been plowed and the snow is showing no signs of letting up. A day like this would always have been a snow day.

Nice to know that the world should revolve around you.

Let me guess…You live upcountry and your street is “fine” therefore MCPS made the wrong call and schools should be open? The world should revolve around you? Do you see all of the school closures in the metro area? Everything is closed. Why in the world should MCPS have open school buildings today?

Usually it's us downcounty folks who are looking around wondering why school is closed!

Don’t be so dramatic. There’s 2 inches of slush on the ground.

MCPS has always closed when there is 2 inches of slush on the ground.

I never said the world revolves around me; just sharing what my street looks like. Sorry you’re having a bad morning. Hope your day improves.🙂

Truly the pro-COVID contingent has lost the plot, when they can say things like, "My street has only a light dusting of snow! Why should a county school system that makes decisions based on conditions throughout the entire county decide to close schools when half the population lives in a place that already has 3 inches of snow on the ground and the school system routinely closes for 3 inches of snow and it's still snowing??!?? HUH???!!! You basement-dwelling quarantine-lovers have gone too far!!!!"

I grew up in MCPS and we routinely closed schools when Poolesville had 3-5 inches of snow and downtown Silver Spring had only freezing rain. That's how it works.

I just scraped 2" off my sidewalks 3 times in the past 2 hours.

That stuff is the worst for driving anyway because it will turn into a sheet of ice.

Yes, Dear. The county school system, which makes decisions based on conditions throughout the entire county, should revolve around the places that are hardest hit. Or did you think that they could open or close schools based on township? This isn't New Jersey. It's called Montgomery County Public Schools, not Darnestown Public Schools, adjacent to Potomac Public Schools, adjacent to Rockville Public Schools and so on.

I hope this helps!

It is not a stretch to assume that a lot of people who normally clear the snow might be sick.

It’s a stretch.

DP. There was actually a press release from the county::
“ Due to a high number of COVID-19 cases, there is a shortage of snowplow operators and contractors available to address this storm event,” said Richard Dorsey, MCDOT chief of Highway Services.

It’s crazy that people lie so much. The county said it was no problem. And here we are and it’s no problem.

That article says there is a shortage of workers. They will be able to clear major roads in a timely fashion but there will be delays in residential areas. Who exactly is lying? And about what?

4 inches of snow in downtown Bethesda. Coming down hard.

If you don’t want your kids to lean then don’t cry when they don’t learn anything.

This is a valid point.

People on the one hand complain about “prepping” and privilege and then on the other don’t understand that it’s the margins that make the difference.

Tomorrow, I will have my kid read a book cover to cover. Not Tolstoy but at least 250 pages of whatever they want. If your kid is playing video games all day, maybe that might explain the “achievement gap”.

Hope your kid is done reading his 250 pages

First, gonna have to call you out as a troll. No one cheering on a “fake” snow day is also a parent of a kid, who like mine, suffered learning loss over the pandemic. I swear, the MCPS teachers Union must have a troll farm working these threads because between the “you just want day care” and the “you’ll just have paras watching your kids” and the “teachers will die in droves” the same old crap keeps popping up and it’s absolute nonsense, flying in the face of all of the evidence and data.

NP, parent of two kids and I am cheering on the snow day. Virtual wasn't great, but kids are catching up and it will all be fine. They worked hard this fall and we are all excited for snow. Kids will do a mix of relaxing and some work, and we will all take off a few hours for the local sledding hill. That is what snow days are for and what my vacation leave was meant for. Relax and make some memories.

It’s hilarious that you think there’s actually going to snow on the ground to sled on. Today was 60 degrees; snow is not sticking.

Well, it's at least a few inches here on the roads, 4-5 inches on the grass. Should be enough for sledding.

Not today. Not when it is this warm out.

And I agree it is consistent with MCPS’s past behavior to close schools today. But it was silly in the past and it is silly now.
