They can be as stubbornly traditional as they want but the simple fact is that the monarchy is going to go extinct due to the absurdly restrictive house laws and then they will be protecting nothing at all. The entire monarchy is riding on 15-year-old Prince Hisahito. What if something happens to him, or he has no sons? There are very few monarchies with agnatic primogeniture anymore and all of them except Liechtenstein are in countries that also allow plural wives.

I don't think he will be able to find a wife. Can you imagine the pressure to produce an heir?

I imagine the IHA will, and have been, looking at the bloodlines of all the noble houses of Japan. Basically any girl between 13-15 right now in those families is being eyed closely - bonus points if her mom, grandmom, and all the way back to the great-grandma has had 3 or more sons. If he's lucky they'll wait until he/she are 20 to announce an engagement but I'm thinking he's got until he's 25 a most. By then his 81-year-old Uncle will be gone, leaving just Hisahito, his currently 61-year-old uncle, and his 55-year-old father.

Why would it matter if the girl’s family had had sons before? Men provide the chromosome that determines gender, not women.

And women carry the fetuses to term. They need a healthy carrier. Both Masako (the current Empress - 8 years before her only daughter was born) and Kiko (next Empress - problems with placenta praevia) had issues with infertility or carrying their child.

They've struck out for 50+ years and the Japanese imperial family are billionaires.

+1. There were reports that Masako (the current Emperess) was undergoing fertility treatments for years in hopes of getting a boy. Clearly that didn’t work.

She appeared a bit with her new husband and her hair has some bounce. Much cuter than the bone-straight look they make the Imperial women wear.

Looks like he's cut his hair, no more ponytail.

Happy for them.

Sad that the Japanese are so close minded and will not let them live in peace even after she left her Royal title.

He did that before the wedding. Still wore the pinstriped suit though.

I'm happy for them but sad that this was the only way forward for them.

Wishing them luck.

That’s why Mako’s mother had to get pregnant again when her older daughters were teenagers.

I hope she cuts her hair short and dyes it pink.

Don't worry. She will be friends with Meghan and Harry. Oprah will take care of her too.

They need to find a noble girl - preferably one whose familial background is extremely fertililiy-blessed and the girl herself isn't anorexic - so basically the opposite of Japanese societal norms - and choose her for him.

I loled at this comment because I imagine the officials examining for voluptuous child bearing hips when the ideal is to be as thin as a reed.
