So what would be worse in the eyes of the people, marrying the allegedly spotty Kei Komuro or marrying a rich titled Westerner? What if Mako had married Georgiy Romanov? Or the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor? They can be as stubbornly traditional as they want but the simple fact is that the monarchy is going to go extinct due to the absurdly restrictive house laws and then they will be protecting nothing at all. The entire monarchy is riding on 15-year-old Prince Hisahito. What if something happens to him, or he has no sons? There are very few monarchies with agnatic primogeniture anymore and all of them except Liechtenstein are in countries that also allow plural wives.
I don't think he will be able to find a wife. Can you imagine the pressure to produce an heir?
I imagine the IHA will, and have been, looking at the bloodlines of all the noble houses of Japan. Basically any girl between 13-15 right now in those families is being eyed closely - bonus points if her mom, grandmom, and all the way back to the great-grandma has had 3 or more sons. If he's lucky they'll wait until he/she are 20 to announce an engagement but I'm thinking he's got until he's 25 a most. By then his 81-year-old Uncle will be gone, leaving just Hisahito, his currently 61-year-old uncle, and his 55-year-old father.
Why would it matter if the girl’s family had had sons before? Men provide the chromosome that determines gender, not women.
And women carry the fetuses to term. They need a healthy carrier. Both Masako (the current Empress - 8 years before her only daughter was born) and Kiko (next Empress - problems with placenta praevia) had issues with infertility or carrying their child.
