I hope so, but he did skedaddle out of there leaving her all alone to shoulder the nasty press. |

Wow, what a reason to hate somebody.
Explaining why Kei is so unpopular in Japan: “Part of it is that Mr. Komuro was not very submissive to Japanese values because he went to international school, is a fluent English speaker and quit a Japanese bank,” said Kumiko Nemoto, a professor of sociology at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies. “In Japanese society, people like to see that people are sacrificing part of themselves to society and the group and family,” Ms. Nemoto added. Mr. Komuro, she said, is more “individualistic, trying to prove himself by accomplishing something professionally.” |
He went to get a law degree in NY, become barred (results of his bar exam live in December 2021), and get a job at a top NYC law firm. To provide for her and his mother who couldn't work anymore under the scrutiny. Long-term he'll make 3x the income as a partner in a New York firm as he would had he stayed in Japan and eventually they might return to Tokyo has his ability to practice in two countries is pretty valuable stuff on the job market. |
| He took the bar in July I think. Results by the 10th of November. Considering he won a prize from the NY State Bar - he's practically guaranteed to have passed. |
I doubt they disapproved? They announced her engagement and it was all happy news until it went south. Hopefully her sister also has a career like Mako and gets outta there. That might convince them to loosen their succession laws. |
Good for him but why not take her with him? They were engaged and the press was really nasty I am told. |
Because the press would be even nastier if she had to support him during law school, and it was probably not financial tenable anyway. I also think that while she was still a princess there could be a lot of interference from both the Chrysanthemum throne/courtiers and the press. Now, it is a clean break. |
Take her with him? LOL He's not even allowed to live with or stay in the same housing with her in Japan. She's a royal. Descended from a goddess. They don't play that - it's not like the British royals sleeping with whoever and having affairs out the wazoo. |
| Could someone explain. There’s the Japanese royal family but then is there a whole level of aristocracy from whom they normally choose their mates? |
Yes, they (or rather her father) disapproved. The only reason she was even allowed to marry (after being engaged for three years) is because the Emperor (her father's brother) interceded and offered his support. Her father hung her out to dry. He's never even been pictured with Kei. Which is fine. As long as he's got his heir he's happy but I hope Hisahito and Kako continue to be happy within the household.

Yes, the noble families of Japan. They don't carry titles anymore post-WWII but the bloodlines are still there. If not the nobles, then the extremely wealthy like the man Princess Ayako married in 2018. She kept her dowry and all the wedding traditional accroutrements.

She seemed all alone before. Emotionally cold families are a horrible type of loneliness. |
| It’s disgraceful that her own parents didn’t step up for her. |
| Most of the uproar is because this young man is from a regular family. Michiko and Masako were also technically commoners but they were from very wealthy families. |
The abuse is because he’s a poor guy. |
