Milk: The years prove it does a body good

I still see parents here yammering that milk is bad for kids.

I'm a tail-end Boomer in my mid 60s. I grew up in farm country and my dad worked at a dairy. We drank milk for most meals when I was young.

I am still the same height now as when I was 18. 5 foot 9. Meanwhile my husband and other once-taller friends who were not milk drinkers are now shorter than I am. My once 5-foot-10 friend is maybe 5'7".

Don't keep your young kids away from milk.

I love milk! We started buying whole milk when my kids were tiny and then never switched back to low fat. A tall glass of milk with a brownie is the best. I know I sound like the dairy council. I don’t care.

I think if your kids can tolerate milk, it is one of the easiest ways to ensure they get not only enough calcium but also enough fat and Vitamin D. It rounds out nutrition well. And whole milk, in particular, just helps ensure kids are getting enough calories and can help fill out nutrition through those picky years when it can be hard to get them to eat a lot of protein or vegetables.

I went through a super picky phase from about age 7 to 11 or 12, and I remember many dinners where I just pushed my food around on plate and all I really consumed was a glass of milk and a dinner roll, maybe one bite of salad and one or two bites of chicken.

Obviously if your kid is lactose intolerant you have to figure something else out.

No. That is driven by sugar consumption. In the US, sugar consumption primarily is from soda and from processed foods that add sugar.

We also always have used whole milk with all our kids. We don't drink sweetened soda and we manage / limit processed foods.

These days there’s a limit to the milk I can comfortably drink, and it’s pretty much always of the skim variety.

Fortunately there’s all kinds of delicious yogurts and cheeses I can eat instead!

Yeah, as an adult I do more while Greek yogurt, but same idea.

We also drank it growing up and milk with cookies and brownies hits the spot, and also (this is weird) some "suppers" I had growing up. I just need some milk with.

That said, my mother drank milk as her only beverage pretty much and still got osteoporosis. So please exercise and lift those weights too!

I say milk is fine if you like it! NBD if you don't! I always like it better than water which was my only choice growing up.

Same. My kids drink probably 3 glasses per day +/-. I think it’s a nearly perfect food: contains fats, protein, carbohydrates in good proportions. Plus excellent source of calcium, B12, potassium, vit D/A. You would hard pressed to find a more nutritionally sound food that kids like and will consume multiple times per day.

I never drank milk as a child or young adult (parent bought skim and it was gross), and never developed a taste for it. I still don’t drink it. I’m sure I will pay for it with some degree of osteoporosis in the future.
