Stopping the data centers

Anonymous
Just read that GW sold a VA campus site and that it was to another data center developer.
This is getting wildly out of control. And for what???

How can we stop this? They are even pushing these into WV now.

It's out in Ashburn. Now we can't build data centers out in the exurbs?

Not sure Ashburn is an exurb and if it was, why would this matter? People live in these places, and their lives are no less important than yours.

I really don’t want them built anywhere because they are a huge resource suck no matter where they are built and they are ruining peoples’ way of life (and probably all of our livelihoods).

I am lucky I live in Fairfax county where it is already very filled in and there are no data centers very close to my house, though it looks like they are building one across from my kid’s school. Hopefully our county government doesn’t get any big ideas and start selling park land.

Ashburn has a population of 50,000. We need to build data centers. Should we build one in the middle of Ballston?

VA is only one of 2-3 states that are dumb enough to allow these. SMH.

Time to move.

The "US?" We can't have an economy based on McDonald's dishwashers.

Loudoun County is flush with tax revenue generated by personal property taxes and property taxes of data centers. Pretty much everyone agrees they are ugly, but they do not really contribute to traffic or needs for new schools as much as new housing construction does. Loudoun doesn't know what to do with all the tax revenue they are generating. BTW the GW campus sale seems crazy to me. Maybe all the homeowners will sell and the whole county will just become data centers.

Or we could, you know, just let there be some green spaces here and there.

The datacenters were there in Ashburn before the houses. AOL opened up its campus off Broderick Drive (off Waxpool) in the mid 1990s. Equinix, Global Center, and UUNet built all their datacenters off Smith Switch Road around that time too. Back then, it was all fields around there -- no housing developments.

The people who bought in those areas knew full well what was there -- there were signs all over advertising land for sale, zoned for datacenters.

Why would you want to stop this? They bring jobs and progress. We need them for AI to flourish.

They aren’t that ugly. They’re just big. It’s not like they look like steel factories or some shit like that.

This. Loudon was already established as data center land when I moved here in 2002. I do have some sympathy for the people who were here before the late 90s, before it became clearly evident what was happening.

Seriously? How about we build them wherever it is you live?
