How often do you communicate with your child in college?

I communicate once a week with a text check in. Other than that, not much. We both seem satisfied with this but I am wondering what is common what factors may come into play.

A couple times a week by text. He'll call me every so often.

Once or twice by text with a quick exchange. Call once a week.

Boy - every other day with me sending a message and him sending thumbs up or similar non-written response. One convo a week if I’m lucky.

Girl - talk everyday usually when she’s walking to class

Usually daily by text and 1 or 2 calls a week. Mom and DD. She texts and calls DH less.

Same. It’s been this way since his first year and now he’s a junior.

Daily in one way or another

My oldest (now a senior) used to call me almost daily on his way back from class. He was struggling that year. After his freshman year it is/was anywhere from once a week to every day in terms of calling. We text a few times a week. No pattern.

My middle (now a freshman) I hear from almost every day whether it is text or call. Also a boy.

Boys- call once a week, family group text daily

Girls-- text and family group text multiple times a day, call when walking to/from class, FaceTime multiple times a day

May I ask what is being discussed daily? I am not asking in a rude way at all.

I have a junior daughter and a freshman son. The junior daughter we speak to pretty much daily as well as text. She is abroad this semester so it’s slightly less calls because of the time change and our work schedules. The freshman bit we text daily and one of us speaks to him at least 2-3 times a week. I can’t imagine only hearing from my kids once a week by text… I love hearing about their days and we talk about classes, career options, friends, etc.

Every few days.

We send photos and sports news back and forth. They communicate with friends so why not with family?

They dislike talking on the phone so we don’t do that as much.

Whenever he chooses to call us. Which is usually every other day.

Senior: multiple times a day by text, and a few times a week by phone. We are very close, but she is also jobhunting right now so she is checking in for guidance about that process.

Sophomore: one or two times a day by text, maybe once a week by phone or FaceTime. Also a girl.

Why do we talk about? Their health, interesting class assignments, drama with friends, weekend plans, the weather in their respective cities. The same kinds of things we talked about when they lived at home.
