Help me not snack at night

Anonymous
I work evenings and am pretty fried after I finish but need a couple of hours to relax before going to sleep. During this time I snack a lot - either because I feel super hungry or else because it just feels great to eat something. How can I avoid this? My willpower is definitely lacking during that time since I’m worn out from work. I do eat a full, healthy dinner at a normal time during work. I am generally asleep by 11:30 pm or midnight.

It doesn't come in the house

I find unsweetened yogurt with a crunchy topping as my last course of dinner helped stop snacking.

Freeze dried fig and a teaspoon of chopped hazelnuts is a favorite.

I’ve also done a little tahini and toasted oats.

+1. Stop buying it or find something low cal like a simple popcorn.

Changing your routine is the best thing you can do. If you must eat when you get home, do something like popcorn and applesauce or peanut butter on toast. Choose a small serving of something that will also act as a comfort food. Then brush and floss your teeth. Put on your pajamas. Reduce your relax time to an hour and then put yourself to bed.

Can you break your dinner in half and eat half of it at work and half of it at home?

I find one giant meal more satisfying than many small meals (as recommended by weight loss people), so I try to plan my biggest meal when I get snackiest. So for me, that is the evening. If I can push my meal (because I won't usually snack before dinner) I feel full and satisfied during my snackiest time. Too full to snack!

It doesn't always work, but that's how I do it. I know some people get snacky at work so they do a big lunch (literally one guy at my work brings what looks like a costco sized salad and multiple chicken breasts etc), so maybe something to try.

OP. Thanks all - these are some great suggestions!

If you have kids or a spouse and they eat snack, buy food you don’t like.

If you don’t, stop eating dinner and turn dinner into snacks. Instead of eating a meal, eat a few small portions throughout the evening.

prefer to eat many times per day rather than a big meal. If I eat a big meal, I STILL want to snack at some point. This has been true before and after GLP-1

If you are single, don’t buy any snack food and if you decide to get a snack, go buy it at Wawa, etc.m as a treat.

I don't know what time you're having dinner or what time you get home; but you should try to avoid eating at least two hours prior to going to bed.
If you really want/need something when you get home because you're hungry/thirsty - not because it's habit - then start by making sure you have a healthy snack with protein. Or try drinking a glass of water. Or have some hot chocolate made with high protein milk.

Maybe have some nuts on your ride home so you're not hungry when you get home. then immediately get ready for bed once you're home. At least that puts your snack earlier in the evening.

Finally, try getting to bed by 11:00 rather than 11:30 or midnight.

Yell in your head "DON'T SNACK!"

Works for me.

I brush my teeth early. Once I brush/floss I am not interested in eating or at least don't want to redo my teeth!

I go for a brisk walk.
