I used to compliment my fat wife just to be polite saying she looks beautiful, good etc. Problem is she thought i was saying the truth and actually believed I found her beautiful. I stopped. Will complement her again when she loses weight

You don't call a person you love a fat wife. You say my wife who has weight issues. You don't ask her to loose weight, you ask her to eat healthy, workout and get annual medical check up.

DH compliments me all the time. Usually beautiful, gorgeous, pretty. If I'm dressing up to go somewhere he usually will say hot or sexy because he knows I like that too. He also compliments if I cook, compliments me if something goes well at work, tells me what a great mom I am. Thanks me for the stuff I do around the house and for the family. Granted, it works both ways. I compliment him and thank him for what he does.

Some people only have good looks to offer so in those cases, it wouldn't be shallow but honest.
