I am not familiar with newark but looking over the news and crime data it seems very very dangerous.
Should we be concerned about taking an Uber up there from nearby Pennsylvania? We opt'd to fly our of newark because it was very cheap but maybe its because of how dangerous the area is? |
| Are you worried about leaving your car at the airport? Or getting carjacked on the way to the airport? Yes Newark is not great, I have a kid student teaching there now and I had to remind her to leave nothing in her car, but I’ve never heard of anyone with crime problems involving the airport. |
| It is fine. I've driven to Newark airport countless times. You know the airport isn't in the middle of the city, right? |
|
I grew up in PA near the NJ border and we always flew in/out of Newark and had visitors do the same because it was almost always cheaper (and an easier drive) than PHL. We never, ever had any issues driving there.
Downtown Newark is not somewhere I would walk around, I was there for work a few years ago and it was very depressing. Falling down buildings, open drug use, lots of homelessness. But that's not where the airport is. |
| I would not drive. I would take Amtrak, but allow extra time for both train delays and to get from the EWR Airport Train Station to one’s terminal. |
I think the best strategy for non-poor people is to ride the train to the Newark train station, then take a cab to the airport. The trains are fine. Newark Penn Station is a bit shabby but fine. The Newark airport is great. The train from the airport is confusing, though, and the monorail system that connects the airport’s train station to the airport is a mess. The tracks are bad, the sound systems in the monorail cars are broken, and the escalators in the monorail stations are messed up. I’d much rather spend a little extra on a cab than deal with the monorail mess. |
| If you don't stop for gas near the airport it's highway into the airport. |
|
Just take the train, it's pretty easy and I didn't find it "sketch" at all.
The last time I took it was in February and the monorail thing wasn't working (planned maintenance of some sort) so we had to take buses from the terminal to the Amtrak station. Hopefully that's over now. it was a little confusing and the bus driver was really rude to the passenger in front of me (it was obvious that English was his second language and she was just awful to him. I even wrote in a complaint about it.) |
Agree with most of this, but I think this PP is the only person in history who has said the bolded. |

| The airport isn't in the sketchy part of Newark. It's off of where a few interstates converge, away from residential areas. |
| The daily parking is insanely expensive and the satellite parking is huuuuuge with like a half hour shuttle ride. Plan ahead. |
| We rented a car and dropped it off at the Newark airport - it was fine. |
Best strategy for “non poor people” is to fly out of Dulles. To OP, as mentioned Newark Airport is right off 95 and the NJ Turnpike. There is nothing to be scared of. I do question the logic in driving four hours for a flight. I assume this is what you’re doing since I hear many DC people fly out of Newark for cheaper international flights. Sure you save some airfare money, but after gas, tolls, time…etc, is it really worth it? |
I have flown out of Newark once for a family trip to Europe. Sure, for one person, it’s not worth flying out of Newark. For our family 5, th savings was like $2k for a four hour car trip and eliminated a connection in Europe. We rented a car here for 1 day and did one-way rental, dropping car off at Newark before the flight (eg no airport parking expense). On return, picked up a car in Newark and did one way rental to DC. It was easy and quicker for us then a train. I also worked at one point in downtown Newark. Downtown Newark is sketch. Airport as previously mentioned is right off highway. When working there, we stayed at the a Newark Marriott. |
