I would not drive. I would take Amtrak, but allow extra time for both train delays and to get from the EWR Airport Train Station to one’s terminal.
I think the best strategy for non-poor people is to ride the train to the Newark train station, then take a cab to the airport. The trains are fine. Newark Penn Station is a bit shabby but fine. The Newark airport is great. The train from the airport is confusing, though, and the monorail system that connects the airport’s train station to the airport is a mess. The tracks are bad, the sound systems in the monorail cars are broken, and the escalators in the monorail stations are messed up. I’d much rather spend a little extra on a cab than deal with the monorail mess.
Best strategy for “non poor people” is to fly out of Dulles. To OP, as mentioned Newark Airport is right off 95 and the NJ Turnpike. There is nothing to be scared of. I do question the logic in driving four hours for a flight. I assume this is what you’re doing since I hear many DC people fly out of Newark for cheaper international flights. Sure you save some airfare money, but after gas, tolls, time…etc, is it really worth it?
I have flown out of Newark once for a family trip to Europe. Sure, for one person, it’s not worth flying out of Newark. For our family 5, th savings was like $2k for a four hour car trip and eliminated a connection in Europe. We rented a car here for 1 day and did one-way rental, dropping car off at Newark before the flight (eg no airport parking expense). On return, picked up a car in Newark and did one way rental to DC. It was easy and quicker for us then a train. I also worked at one point in downtown Newark. Downtown Newark is sketch. Airport as previously mentioned is right off highway. When working there, we stayed at the a Newark Marriott.
