Agreed. On a similar vein, a couple times we've driven to Philly to fly because the most logical itinerary would have required us to connect there anyway, and depending on the flight departure time from DC the connection times just didn't work well. |
| Getting to Newark is fine. Danger is not an issue, and the airport itself is nice. The issue is delays - even before all this recent stuff, we've had horrendous delays going out of and into Newark. My batting average is much better for the Philadelphia airport. |
For a large family, I can see this making sense. A 4 hour drive home doesn’t sound too great, after an international flight, but if that’s your worst hardship, life is going OK for you. |
| The sketchiest part of flying out of Newark is their record of air traffic control issues—both staffing and faulty equipment. |
|
Newark airport is right off the highway and, I imagine, completely safe. However, it's rundown, poorly organized, has bad signage, and has food that is both the worst and most expensive of any airport I've ever been in. Also had to sit on the tarmac on arrival because Immigration/customs wasn't open yet.
And then there are the above mentioned air traffic control issues. I do my best to avoid it. |

Do not take the train to "Newark" station, which is NOT at the airport and is in a sketchy area.
Instead take the train to the "Newark Airport" train station. Yes, EWR has its very own station on Amtrak's NE Corridor. |

Reading comprehension people - she’s talking about taking an Uber from Pennsylvania so all of this discussion about parking and a 4 hr drive from DC is irrelevant.
Anyway, it’s fine and I promise you won’t get carjacked on 95. |
| You should be more worried about the safety of the airport itself. |
Yes, if going to Newark Airport, get off at Newark Airport Station. FYI, downtown Newark station isn’t that bad. I’ve used it many times for business in downtown Newark. It’s a station in an urban environment, which I know scares some people. If you’re the type to have your head on a swivel, clutching your purse and sprinting to the other side of the street anytime you see a non-white coming at you, you might have issues. Otherwise, it’s actually perfectly fine, |
The irony classism and highlighting “non-poor,” but you’re going to Newark to save money???? Nothing wrong with saving a buck, but your comment is strange. |

Agree that if you're just switching trains it's NBD. It wouldn't recommend wandering around downtown Newark after dark without being familiar with it, but there are tons of offices and a major hospital near the station and thousands of people travel through it every day. |

I’ve been to Newark Airport many times for meetings in NJ. It’s totally fine. You can see it from the NJTP. And the airport itself is nice post renovation.
I had a meeting in downtown Newark last month and had to stay overnight. Not my favorite place but I was fine walking 8 blocks to my meeting in the morning (which was right behind Newark Penn Station). |
|
Newark Airport and the drive to the airport is absolutely fine. Even Newark Penn Station is fine at peak times (I wouldn’t be there at non-peak times).
Agree with others though, consider EWR’s recent delay issues. We got stuck back in the spring because of them. Finding that it’s really only okay to fly United out of EWR because it’s a hub and they have a lot of planes there. |
No, she should be more worried about being in a car accident on the way to the airport. That is literally the most dangerous part of her trip, even though she doesn’t realize it. |
