| 10yo DD went to a playdate at new friend's house with a couple of other friends. The mom made all the girls deposit their devices into a basket upon entry and got them back when they went home. Is this normal??? DD doesn't have a phone or anything but said one friend felt weird about taking off her apple watch |
| I don’t have an issue with it. The girls are there to play with each other. I’m fine with it being a “no electronics” play date. |
| I’d be thrilled. I hope I can be that courageous when my kids get old enough. |
| Sounds ridiculous and controlling |
|
It sounds reasonable to me. She doesn't want to monitor phone use during the playdate, she doesn't know what parental controls you have set up on your kids phones.
We do phones much later, but when my kids were that age and their friends had phones I would not let them take it upstairs - only public areas of the house. |
Me too. Elementary and middle school kids do not need unsupervised and unrestricted internet used, especially when in groups. |
| Maybe for ES but seems like a lot of middle school. |
|
It's fine.
She probably got tired of finding playdating kids sitting in companionable silence on their phones. |
So phone basket for ES and MS are good but don't do it for high school? |
Maybe they’re in high school but these are 10-year-olds. |
I think it’s even more ridiculous that 10 Yr olds have phones |
+1 what a lovely idea! |
| Is a phone basket something I should do when I host playdates / do other parents expect this of me? |
Should have refused and see if mom forced it off. |
Agree- I wouldn't want to monitor phone/internet use during a playdate either. This would be fine with me. |
