+1. Why didn’t they verify before offering admissions. What incompetence.

This way they could identify a cheaters and help detoxify TJ.

The TJ Admissions office did not. There are plenty of kids whose parents just signed the online free meals form and did not have to produce documentation.

Some cheaters were removed, but many were not.

This is not true. We fill out the form every year and have to provide corresponding government provided snap information.

The conspiracy nuts are trying to mislead people about this. I guess they believe doing so helps their case. As another poster suggested, I think this was a stroke of genius since it allowed the administration to weed out more of the toxic cheaters that have really hurt TJ's culture in recent years.

No documentation is required, only a case number for applying for FARMS program.

and how do u get the case number??

In Virginia, schools are only required to spot-check FRMs forms.

For the case number, that is a child's Medicaid case number. Virginia is one of five states that is doing a demonstration project to integrate the Medicaid and FRMs systems. They are still accepting regular applications during the demonstration project.

A few years ago, one of my friends who had a K student and did not know what the form was and got it in the massive packet of the beginning of school forms, just signed and returned it. She was shocked to learn that her child was getting free meals. She actually called the county to see if she could correct it and she was told that there was not a way to remove FRMs designation once it was given until the next school year.

FCPS is only PRETENDING to deal with the FARMS screwup. They are only requesting a case number that you applied for FARMS without requiring any documentation to prove low income.

I don’t know why people are trying to argue that schools ask for income as a matter of course for free/reduced meals. Go and look at the sample application on the USDA website. It only says “ We may also ask you to send written proof of the household income you report.”

Schools do not have the time to review income statements. Period. The person arguing that FCPS is verifying income is probably the same person who was trying to argue that FCPS had IRS data.

The TJ admissions office allowed parents to maintain the economically disadvantaged experience factor if they submitted an FRM application.

At a certain point, there is too much checking. It is one thing to make sure people understand that the question was for low income eligible for FARMS and to make sure people weren't using the loophole of free meals during COVID. If people are cheating beyond that, then it is really outside of TJ's purview, and is an actual cheater.

Yes, were they checking every single listed accomplishment in the old app?

It certainly went up when they finally started taking kids from less affluent middle schools.

Pretty hard to not go up given how low the # was before. 0.6%

We won't know if that was the reason for the increase unless they release the scores for applicants. The 90 point bonus for FARMS was probably the reason for the increase.

It wasn't a screwup. This was a masterful stroke of genius that allowed them to easily identify the more toxic applicants and remove them from the process.

Untrue the cheaters were removed so have no impact on the stats.

Their motivation isn't know nor is it relevant. In the end providing these opportunities to bright and gifted low-income students who can't afford to spend $20k on prep at Curie is a win for all of us.
