US has no good options in Ukraine

The country’s government is only 8 years old, formed via a sketchy coup that I watched on Liveleak before that site went bust. Ever since day 1 of this government, Donbas has been a contested zone with separatist forces insisting that they be separate from Ukraine and fighting back and forth. If Putin wants to side with the separatists and support their self determination to the detriment of the new Ukraine regimes self determination, why is that wrong and not the other way around? Why is it a given that we all should just not support the self determination of the separatists living in the Donbas region?

I mean imagine if there was a state in Mexico trying to separate and be their own country and if the US decided to pick a side and put an end to it I once in for all it would be ridiculous for Russia to be like “no we disagree and prefer the other side” from all the way across the world. Then when you think of this in light of the fact that the US government has effected regime change after regime change throughout history it seems highly hypocritical here.

I say go on principle of self determination — if a seperatist region wants to separate let them (after all America was a separatist region from Great Britain). How come we support Taiwan being a separatist region from China but we were against the separatist regions leaving Ukraine?

Today's script out late?

Why can’t we have a legitimate discussion about these things without just total dismissal.

Isn’t the current Ukrainian government essentially a seperatist group from the old Ukrainian government? Didn’t we arm the Free Syria Army, another separatist group, in their battle against Bashar Al Assad? Is russia not allowed to choose a separatist group that they want to advocate for?

DP. What you posted is nothing more than Russian propaganda. No one should dignify it with a response.

How is it Russian troll farm propaganda? Enlighten me.

In 2014, the US backed the Ukrainian separatists that overthrew the entire government, and no one cared about the former government’s sovereignty. In 2022, Russia backed the Ukrainian separatists that want to overthrow a tiny piece of the country, and all of a sudden the current government’s sovereignty must be protected and there is mass hysteria and outrage. Make it make sense.

Your assessment of the relative strength of Russia versus that of the United States seems very poorly founded. You think they're more prepared for us than we are for them? I mean, it's war. It would be a shit show all around. Enormous suffering. But we're better than they are.

Yes they are more prepared because Russians are willing and used to suffer more than Americans are.

Americans are tougher than you think.

Americans throw tantrums for the smallest inconveniences

I can’t wait to see what happens if gas hits 8 dollars a gallon.

First of all, apologies for peddling conspiracies, but I am trying to find some comforts right now convincing me there won't be nuclear apocalypse or some insane bio warfare or some massive extermination event. Feel free to flame and tell me I am an idiot, I won't be offended.

Gas this expensive will cause prices for a lot of other basic necessities to rise, e.g. crazy inflation. Our salaries aren't likely to rise, so we all will feel much poorer except for those with loads of cash or assets. There will be a move towards more austere lifestyle, which has been against the whole concept of abundance and comforts of the western world. And I am sure there will be those getting very very rich from all this, another transfer of money from the worker bees to the classes that own everything. You may wonder if there are forces in the world that want this, lack of upward mobility, wide acceptance of austerity by general population, and concentration of resources and power in very few hands, total control of population and their movements, etc, etc. These are the conspiracies I would not like to see to come to reality, but I also don't want to believe we will be in the full blown war with the wrongest country we could go to war with.. maybe except China.. Let there be peace

Pp here. I appreciate the response. I welcome a more austere and stoic lifestyle

If they're going to college in eastern Europe, maybe.

Remarks like "this is the largest military action since WW2" make clear what I've long believed: the West only counts things that happen to white people.

Iraq? Libya? Oh that was democracy strategy security...something.

Largest action in Europe.

Pay better attention.

Ukraine’s ambassador to the US just told us that a Russian platoon from the 74th Motorized Brigade has surrendered to Ukraine’s forces. She says that the Russian troops apparently had been unaware they were being sent to kill Ukrainians.

No confirmation yet from Russia’s military

Who are you quoting? When I hear comments like that, it has included “in Europe.”

DP. "A tiny piece"? Russia has bombed the entire country. I agree with the PP that you're peddling Russian troll farm propaganda.
