The United States Feels Like a Sad, Empty, Dark Place

Anonymous
It’s unrecognizable. It’s callous. It’s frightening. It’s stressful. It’s crass. I would say to anyone still thinking of coming here to not bother. There is no pleasure living in the US due to politics, standards of living, how expenses it is, the lack of real freedoms, half of the country engulfed by the maga cult even when facts stare them in the face, a broken and cruel SCOTUS who insists on unlimited executive power that has sealed our fates as a country, AI taking over, and tech bros being clearly in charge, our way of life being dismantled, education on its knees…there is no amount of praying that will ever see us through, it’s over for all of us. It’s too late.

OP, we all feel this way. It’s bad. A lot of us don’t see a way out either. Just know you aren’t alone.

OP, it’s not too late. If you stood on a corner with a sign that criticized the Trump admin would you be put in jail? NO. Until you can’t do that it’s not too late.

Please, turn off news/social media and volunteer for the VA elections. Attend a Tesla Takedown, get a group of friends to do a sign wave (literally holding signs on street corner). Go to Indivisible.org and find an event or group. Check out Mobilize. There are multiple events daily!

There is zero excuse for doing nothing. This is for anyone on this thread who wants to doom and gloom. It’s hard, but giving up is not an option. I say this with love and compassion: Stop complaining and Act.

This is all true, but for a lot of people that had it good for a really long time this is a time of reckoning that will require these moments of realization.

People will need to this dark realization to move forward.

I feel the same way. I am a 67 year old woman in Texas and am horrified at what my state and the US are becoming. Greed and power are all that matters to those now in charge, not what we the people want. I honestly am glad that I am old. I lived through so many great times, and the future looks dim.

I’m horrified too OP, but you do need to get off the internet. Go outside and take a walk. Chat with a neighbor. There’s plenty of good in the US and the world.

Has your personal reality actually changed?

Think for a minute and try to understand that this "sad, empty, dark place" has been the reality of the US for indigenous people, Black people, and other POC since, well, the beginning. You're freaking out because now it's threatening you personally. And that makes sense, in a way, but it also reveals how crazy sheltered you've been to not see that this really isn't anything new.

Quit with the doomer shit and go do something. As a pp upthread points out, there's still a LOT you can do, especially if you're as white as you sound, and you should be doing it. Go find an organization run by people with more melanin than you and volunteer your time and resources. Listen and learn. Plenty of people have been fighting this for a long time. You can give up when they do.

Seriously? Then why are so many people moving here? Why do so many people stay? They've had generations to leave if it was so bad. Stop with the racist garbage and the superiority. You are part of the problem why it's so dark.

Mine at work has and even at other events. People are just less careful with what they say. They at least unconsciously view people as disposable. They give themselves leeway to act poorly because it seems to be justified by the culture. It's an every day occurence.

That surprises me but I guess that’s dependent on where you work.

Go to Northern Italy, rural France, the UAE, and Singapore and report back on how enlightened everyone is about the issues you care about. Spread your wings and find how progressive the rest of the world is. You can do it OP!

beside the point. The fact is America isn't what it used to be. And we can be sad about that.

The internet is brainwashing you, quit social media, limit the internet and you may become a more content individual. We have more than enough here, have you ever visited a foreign country? Ever lived anywhere else? Visiting a foreign country is one thing, living there is another. There’s a good reason why people want to immigrate here and it’s not always for jobs.

Sounds like you spend a lot of your day and night on social media echo chambers and not physically doing anything with a diverse set of friend or contacts.
