This just started a few months ago. I would have expected to vomit from working out on a full stomach, not an empty one. I have never vomited before from working out, and regularly do 5x/week workouts involving a mix of spin, swim, and weights. It's only when my heart rate gets super high, and only when I've got nothing in my stomach aside from water. I'm 49.
I don't really know if this is some sort of perimenopause thing or what. Doctor's statement was just "have a protein bar before working out." Is this something I should be concerned with? |
If this is new, i.e., you've always worked out on an empty stomach and didn't vomit, then yes you need to follow up. |
If it’s new and different for you, and deep down you feel like there’s something wrong, then ask for more testing.
Otherwise, it’s not unusual to want a little something in your stomach when you have a big workout. Personally, plain water before a running race makes me nauseous so I have to be careful what I hydrate with. |
Have you tried eating a protein bar? Or the classic pre-early-morning workout food, a banana? This would be an easy test.... |
OP here. The banana certainly seems easier to digest than a protein bar. Those make me feel like I ate a brick. A lot of the time that this happens is when I wake up and go directly to working out. I don't like to eat or even have coffee when I work out first things because it makes me nauseous. But a banana might be easy enough. |
Banana is pure carbs so will fuel you but it might also spike your glucose and you mentioned Type 2 so ask your endocrinologist. Generally they wouldn’t recommend eating bananas. |
^^ sorry never mind you never mentioned T2. I have confused this with another post. Carry on. |
How high is your heart rate getting when this happens? |
OP here. Only around 150. Which is pretty normal for me in terms of what I mean by "high". |
That's normal. It's well known in ED world. |
I get nauseous when my blood sugar is low and my DS vomits when his is really low (seems counterintuitive to vomit when you are hungry, but I think it is the stomach acids). I don't think this is rocket science, but is your body's way of saying that you don't have enough fuel for your workouts. A banana or a half a plain bagel or something small seems like an easy way to see if it helps. |
this makes sense. I think this is also in the context of job changes necessitating going into the office every day and therefore having to change when I can work out. So first thing in the morning or right after work (and several hours after lunch). Also just eating less and not really cuing in to my body because job has gotten super high-stress. |
You aren't used to vigorous exercising, and haven't built up glycogen stores to fuel you through a workout and you become hypoglycemic temporarily due to using up the glycogen but not being ketosis either. Transitory and you could do two things. Eat a couple hours before exercise, or BETTER just push through it and back off on intensity so it doesn't happen so badly, and build up your endurance and body, and it won't happen after a while. |
Happens to me too. I have to hydrate and eat something low sugar before work out. I add a drop of mint essential oil to my water and it soothes stomach. |
Protein is the worst thing to eat right before working out. You need quick acting carbs not protein. |
