Eastern HS

Interested in feedback on the current principal and the rest of the leadership team. Are they succeeding in turning the school around? Is the IBD worth it? How are the AP classes? Feedback on English and math teachers for upper classmen is much appreciated.

It’s best if you go to the school yourself OP, and check it out. No one here sends their kids to Eastern.

Captain, the ship is going down!

Great. Now move that deck chair over to the other side of the pool. Titanic customers deserve the best possible view of that iceberg.

I think so. He worked with Trogisch at Walls, too, back in the day. He was at Ron Brown when they were starting up and at Banneker when it was expanding; he’d be a good choice if you wanted to recruit more kids to Eastern. Also his parents were military and he has that ability military kids often have to be at ease with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. A really promising choice for Eastern, I think.

The new principal was the founding principal at Ron Brown - not just a staff member, and I do think the experience at Banneker will be helpful, as they are the only other school with an IB program in the city. The current principal is great, I believe he is leaving because his wife's job is moving them overseas - so nothing scandalous, and I think it allowed them a lot of lead time to find the new principal.

It is not huge, but there is increased buy-in every year from the increasingly in-bounds enrolled feeder middle schools. We know several families at Eastern, some of whom are in the full IB program, some of whom are taking a combination of the IB program and the Health Sciences academy classes. There is also an IT track that I think one family we knows is pursuing. The band and some of the sports teams do some practices/collaboration with the middle schoolers, and at least from Eliot Hine the 8th graders in geometry walk over to Eastern for their classes so they are in the school for that purpose. There is also an honors 'EPIC' program from 9th and 10th graders that kids can apply into, before the full IB program starts in 11th and 12th grade. https://www.easternhighschooldcps.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=573456&type=d

My child is still in middle school, so not sure where we will end up, but they are leaning towards Eastern. I agree though - probably not a ton of folks on DCUM there, but if you ask around or at the school I am sure they can connect you with families that are there.

Great choice! Thought he would have taken over at Banneker. But he can make Eastern in his vision and you can't beat that.

+1 I was going to ask the same thing. I understand there is some sort of moderation on this site, but none of the comments on this thread seemed off topic or inappropriate.

Do you know any families with specific feedback on their 9th/10th graders in EPIC?

Maybe it was Banneker bashing. hating on Banneker is unfortunately something that happens here.

Interesting, I didn't see any bashing Banneker - but the one that alludes to Eastern being a 'sinking ship' like the Titanic is still on the page --

Anyway - I know a few families in the EPIC program who have been happy with the classes and the teachers thus far. I forget the number of kids the principal said were in the program this current school year, but it had grown since the prior years, and they were planning capacity for it to continue to grow. Hopefully with the transition in leadership they can continue the momentum and not have to re-start or change too many things.

Thanks!! I need to get myself down there to check it out. It would be so amazing if it worked out. My kid would be thrilled.
