Graduation Speakers

How do schools choose them? My child graduates this year and I'm a bit disappointed to see local politicians giving speeches at these events. Especially since two of them are running for CE and my concern is they will just use it as a self serving platform.

And while it may not sound like it, I like both as politicians. I just don't think this is what they should be doing.

I believe it's a school-based/principal-led decision.

I guess Morgan Freeman was busy?

Unless they have a close personal connection to the school, I agree that it's a little iffy, OP.

I didn't like ours a couple of years ago. Also a politician. She just talked about herself the entire time. It was boring.

I really enjoyed Churchill’s last year. I think it’s great when they get an alumni from the school. I see they did that again at the school for this year, and although I’m not familiar with her, I think it will be nice. Definitely like that path better than a county politician, though others may feel differently and prefer a different path. Schools can’t win as there’s no way to please everyone.

I like that Northwood is just doing student speakers. That’s what the day is about and how it should be. MCPS needs to get over its ego.

Will Jwando is speaking at ours. I don’t like it either. It’s locked in audience for political reasons.
It should be students speaking.

I think this is a lot more meaningful for the graduates too.

Ugh, Jawando.

He was on Zoom for a neighborhood meeting regarding the big mental health and substance abuse for-profit treatment center opening Nextdoor to an elementary school in the Sherwood pyramid. Said nothing. He was there to back up the electeds.

I agree that he and Glass should not have a captive audience of voters. Hopefully he won’t make it about him or his election.

Doesn’t he have kids in private school? (Or going to private HS in the fall?)

Last time I had heard, He had two kids in public and two kids in private.

He moved into the Sherwood cluster a couple of years ago so he could end up with a kid there.

Jason Makstein would be a good speaker if they are having other local news people

He has a child with special needs, can't hate him for doing what's best for each of his kids.
