Miyares is right about discrimination

Read through this and you will see that FCPS has been trying for years to change the demographics of TJ to have a higher percentage of certain types of minority (black/hispanic)….which can only happen by lowering the percentage of other minorities (Asians).

Nobody cares.

Talk to me when Asian Americans at TJ drop to the same percentage of Asian Americans in FCPS. The amount of complaining that the 1.5% guarantee at every MS cost Asian Americans 30 seats at TJ is astonishing.

Meanwhile Black families would just like to be statistically represented at TJ while AA families are complaining about making up less than 70% of the school population.

T
The old standards may not have been perfect, but they were objective. They adjusted standards repeatedly and it didn't work. So, now they have changed the standards for you.

Now, TJ has over 5 % Black. Fairfax County schools estimate 10%. students are Black.
19% of TJ is white. Fairfax County estimates 36% are white.

Why do you care about statistics? Do you not think Black kids are as capable? Sounds like you think they cannot meet the standards. Did you know there were Black students at TJ prior to this. Of course, they were qualified to be there. They met the standards and they wanted to be there.

Well, I taught lots of Black kids and they are capable. If they want to work on go to TJ, they are capable of it. Some years they were the smartest kids in my class. Some years they weren't.

I'm white. I have one kid of my own who would have fit in there. Would she have gotten in? Maybe. Maybe not. She didn't take the test because she did not want to go to a school that was so far away. She didn't want to spend all that time on the bus. To some other kids, it is worth it.

What the SB did is to change the purpose of TJ. It used to be for the driven and brightest in the county. Now, it is measured differently. I guess you could say it is for the brightest in a school, but if another school has too many really, really bright kids, some really smart ones don't get in.

This is what is wrong. We are measuring on the basis of skin color. Not a good idea.

In a nutshell . . . Public schools suck.

Miyares should look into how many kids from schools in the Diocese of Arlington have been admitted to TJ. I know that no students from the DofA school that my kids attend has ever gotten into TJ. Each year two or three apply and none have ever been accepted.

To make matters worse, the applications for TJ need to be turned in before the DofA has completed testing, making it almost impossible to meet application requirements/deadlines.

I’m not whining, just pointing out that TJ admissions leave a lot to be desired from many different groups.

Are Catholics going to claim discrimination now?

DP, and E Asian. +1. The old system was stacked unfairly in favor of S Asians, mainly because one prep center was giving the actual questions to their prep students before sitting the TJ exam. (Sure, FCPS should have detected the problem before the TJ students who benefited outed their prep center on Facebook, but sadly apparently FCPS didn’t.). The current TJ admissions system is not perfect, but provides a wildly more level playing field.

This shouldn’t be about percentages. It should be about a student’s interest and ability.

FCPS schools are a reflection of our school board.

In the case of TJ admissions, the FCPS school board is indeed racist.

That is a lie. But you already know that, and yet you continue to lie about it in the other thread.

TJ test answers were never for sale.
