If you d kept up with politics for a while, do you think the current reaction to Trump is on par with sentiments towards George W Bush?

GW was a bad president, but he wasn’t a traitorous waste of skin.

He was literally called Hitler at every opportunity. He’s also a war criminal.

Ok?

We are terrible at electing presidents, and the worst ones are all republicans.

That doesn’t change the fact that Trump is the worst of any of them and it’s not even close.

No. I always felt that Bush — with Cheney— was a terrible president, but he wasn’t a completely terrible human being. I could imagine having an enjoyable dinner with him and Laura — as long as we stayed away from most political topics. I think he quite often meant well — but couldn’t really understand or anticipate some of the huge problems that could be expected to accompany what I view as terrible policies. No Child Left Behind is one example.

Trump, though, was long seen in NY as a racist, a dishonest and bullying businessman, and as someone you would not want to get stuck in an elevator with. Some people adore that. It’s a very different vibe. I don’t think people ever used words like “malignant narcissist “ and progressive “dementia “ about Bush, for all his highly problematic decisions.

Bush was HORRIBLE, seriously dumb, and an absolute liar.

But his cabinet and in general those around him were competent. I may have disagreed with every thought in their head but they understood their roles and took them seriously. ALso, Bush did not defy judges and the Constitution every chance he got.

People may have laughed at Bush but no one before has ever made this country a pathetic laughing stock. There is just no comparison.

PP here. I want to add, OP, that I find this question extremely troubling. It normalizes Trump by comparing him to other presidents. We have never had a dictator before.

Agreed. Trump stands alone. He is in an entirely different category: upending our democracy, grifting every chance he gets, and laying waste to programs that help people here and save lives worldwide.

They’re felon killed as many with his Covid disinformation and now cutting back on USAID. Let’s not forget Palestinians over the last few months.
