How bad is this Connection at LAX?

Anonymous
all in one ticket, how risky is this?

Connection time: 1 hour 35 min
Flight details:
Arriving on an international EVA Air flight
Connecting to a domestic United flight
Arrival time: 9:30 PM on a Sunday in August at LAX
Checked bags: Yes tagged to IAD
Global Entry: Yes
Anonymous
I don’t find a 1:35 layover any more risky. Should have plenty of time to move between flights.

I'd say you would be fine if flying AA back to DC, because you could go through security/recheck at the Bradley terminal at LAX after you arrive on EVA. At most you would have a 10 minute walk to your gate.

The problem for this is that you will have to go from Bradley terminal to T7 for United, and I don't think you can recheck your bags at Bradley, you have to lug them with you to T7. That's a 15-ish minute walk outside along sometimes crowded sidewalks, or a possibly backed up traffic nightmare on a shuttle bus around the 2nd half of the LAX horseshoe.

If you didn't have checked bags and know you can get through passport control quickly because of GE, I'd say it's very tight but possible, because you also wouldn't need the time to drop them off at United. With checked bags I think it's too tight. If there is another United flight an hour later, I'd be cool with that.

This is very helpful, did not realize there is no recheck.
I need to line up to drop my bags at T7 again?
This is the last flight of the day ☹️

You'll have to walk or take the bus bus from Tom Bradley to United. It's quite a trek. I have been able to drop tagged bags immediately after leaving customs, so didn't need to drag those over to the United terminal. I did however have to go through TSA security again at the United terminal, and it's hard to predict how long that will be.

Another concern would be any delay to the EVA plane - delays at the departure airport or delays getting to the gate at LAX or delays collecting your luggage to exit customs.

I'd be nervous.

Check with United. I've always been able to recheck my bag immediately after customs.

At Bradley for United flights? If so, yes that would help OP a lot to not have to lug bags to.T7. But still have to lug themselves. I'd budget 15 minutes for that, then another 10-15 to get to the gate from the T7 entrance. Gonna be very tight no matter what.

TSA lines at United at LAX are variable, might be bad or might be OK. This depends mostly on time of day.

Customs and Immigration lines at LAX will be looong -- unless pax have Global Entry or an APEC card. Taiwan citizens definitely can get an APEC card in TW for sure and might (I am not certain) be able to get GE also. If none of the above, download the US Mobile Passport app for one's phone before boardibg EVA at TPE.

Others are right that schlepping bags between the terminals will not be fun. If this is a return home flight, not an outbound flight, I might check bags for the leg from LAX -- even though I never check any bags.

Also, UA gives away seats if pax are not at the gate at least 15 (?) minutes before end of boarding. On a wide-body, UA pre-boarding starts about 50 minutes before push back.

When I've taken international flights like this, there's been a bag recheck area just outside the customs exit doors. There are luggage conveyor belts, and staff issuing instructions, loudly. Because my bag was tagged through to IAD, I didn't have to get in any line - I just put the bag where I was told and off it went down the conveyor belt. I was then able to walk to T7 with just by hang luggage and go through TSA there. I have never managed to take the bus because I didn't know when it was coming, and after a long flight, walking was good for me.

I believe there is a bag recheck right outside customs ar TBIT, if your bag is tagged through to IAD. You could duck right back through security there and walk through the terminals, although it's a bit convoluted and your probably better off walking on the sidewalk outside at least from TBIT to Terminal 6.

That's great to hear, I didn't have details, but assumed you could only bag drop for airlines at Bradley and T4 (American). Definitely helpful for OP, but still think it's a very tight timeline to get done in 1:35:

1. Exit the plane (10 minutes if in economy)
2. Walk to passport control (5 minutes)
3. Clear passport control (5 minutes because of GE)
4. Wait for bags (10 minutes?)
5. Exit customs and drop bags (5-10 minutes)
6. Walk to T7 (15 minutes)
7. Clear T7 security and walk to gate (10 minutes)

That's around an hour with no delays by my math, puts you at the gate 30 minutes before the United flight leaves. So yes, possible, but very tight and no room for error.

LAX sucks. I hate to tell you this but that layover is way too tight. You better have a plan B for when you miss the second flight.

This is a helpful breakdown. It takes at least 60 minutes to reach the gate, and since this is the last flight of the day, I’ll definitely consider alternative itineraries.

Are both flights on the same ticket, meaning the airline will have to rebook you if you miss the flights, or are they on separate tickets meaning you're toast if you miss the second one?

Same ticket, but l don’t want to be stuck overnight in lax since it is the last flight of the day and I will probably be out of pocket for hotel
