In recent weeks, the government has revoked hundreds, possibly thousands, of student visas, many from individuals who have protested against the genocide in Gaza, criticized Israel publicly, or asked for universities to divest.

An investigation by The Guardian revealed that pro-Israel members of U-M’s board had pressed Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to bring charges against the students. The report notes that six of eight regents donated more than $33,000 combined to Nessel’s campaigns in order to influence the attorney to do so.

Bottom line, you can protest for climate change, black lives matter, immigrants rights, but if you protest against Israel then be prepared to be targeted and put on a list, raided, and possibly deported.

Protests at institutions of higher learning are especially threatening to those who support Israel as there is precedent for student activism that eventually led to the end of the similarly racist apartheid regime in South Africa.

I hate to tell you, but most Americans don't really care about students who come here from other countries and choose to engage in protests of any nature. Just be glad you're here, count your blessings, and get the education and degree desired. Then return to your country and protest.

The cold hard truth is that a lot of Americans are misinformed about Israel/Palestine. If they knew what us going on there many would be a lot less supportive. This is why the pro-settlers are so razor-focused on squashing any protest and anything that bring information that is not straight out of Ben Gvir & friends.

More Americans have negative views of Israel than not, and after the arrests and deportation over free speech, those numbers are going to be increasing.

The US constitution, which you apparently know little about, has repeatedly affirmed that constitutional rights, including those in the First Amendment, apply to all "persons" within the U.S., not just "citizens."

So foreign visitors to our country, including students, absolutely have the right to protest unless it involves breaking specific laws.

That's all fine and well. I'm just saying what most Americans are thinking about the protestors and what I would do if studying in another country.

Americans absolutely are sharing pro-Palestinian (NOT pro-Hamas) views on social media and in public protests. But there is a climate of fear surrounding that since the current government has almost made it a crime to voice pro-Palestinian sentiments.

It’s also about safety and resources and campuses and cities that don’t have permanent encampments that block buildings. We had - until recently - entire city blocks of white men on drugs who took it over. Oops! I can’t go there with my kids.

That's all fine and well. I'm just saying what most Americans are thinking about the protestors and what I would do if studying in another country.

I seriously doubt that you speak for "most Americans." Maybe MAGA Americans, but not most Americans. I think you're just revealing your own personal bias against protesting in general. Lots of conservatives are uncomfortable with public protests--with the exception, of course, of Jan. 6 "protests."

Further, a recent poll by the non-partisan Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) found that: Only 26% of Americans support or strongly support deporting international students on valid student visas for expressing pro-Palestinian views. In contrast, 52% oppose or strongly oppose such deportations, while 22% neither support nor oppose.
