The number of people without eyes on the road is insane. You can use maps. Maybe hands free call. And 911. That's it. Somehow, cellphone and car manufacturers need to find a way to disable phone use when driving. It's so dangerous. And it makes traffic so much worse.

I would support this. I am SO.SICK of people with their effing eyes on a phone all the time. At lights, driving, etc.
only maps are OK. |
| I've mentioned this before, but it seems I am always the car beeping my horn at the traffic light to get everyone to get off their phones and drive. I've made a conscious decision to not surf/text, etc. when driving after almost getting in an accident after taking my eyes off the road for a "quick sec". Just not worth it. |

The first ten years after cell phones really became commonplace (pre-iphone), I talked on the phone while driving all the time, and it didn't seem so bad, and other people doing it didn't seem so bad... then they started to crack down on it, and I rarely do it now, and when I do, I'm shocked at how distracting it is... I really don't know I did it all those years. And I don't remember thinking other people were on their phones too much either...
Maybe it's the screen thing... |
Cars and cellphone makers are never going to do this because it's not good for their business. Luckily we have a mechanism that allows us to set rules and regulations so that we don't have to worry about whether a car manufacturer will do the right thing. Call your congressman. |
| Manual. Transmission. |
People are way too shy about using their horn. I have zero hesitation to use it if the light turns green, and your break lights are still on. Either you're on the phone, or have very poor reaction time. You don't need to wait until the intersection is clear - lights already have a delay, and if you're paying attention looking around when the light was red, there's no reason to wait. And then there's the swerving, veering into another lane. Put down your G-damn phones, people. If you've been honked at, that means it's time to change your behavior. |
talking is not the problem....imo. its the ability to surf the web, watch, TV, play games and so forth. that people can't seem to curb their addiction during their drive. In the end, we all just need to shut up and drive... |
I could not disagree with your first point more. I don’t use phone while driving and I always wait about one second after light turns green. I can’t tell you how many red light burners I see and I always wait a brief second before entering intersection. I do agree with your last point. Get off the phones people! |
| Drivers need to get off the phone, but it’s not the responsibility of the phone manufacturer. How are they going differentiate between a driver and a passenger? |
With the gyroscopes and motion sensors in phones, it would be real easy to have them stop connecting when going over a certain speed. But imagine the lawsuits when someone is rushing to a scene or hospital and trying to call ahead. |
This isn't necessarily the problem. It's also the people who go under the limit, or fluctuate, because they're on their phone. Slowing down so you can use your phone while driving IS NOT SAFER. I will gladly take someone going 60 in a 45 but with all their eyes on the road and checking their mirrors constantly, than someone going 35 in a 45 but on their phone. |
I don't really understand this position. When you're waiting at a red light, what are you doing? Are you spaced out? If you're doing what your supposed to be doing and constantly looking around, then you don't need to wait a second or two after the light turns green to go. You will already know if the intersection is safe. |
| I can't believe how many times I'm behind people at stoplights who have their phones in those little holders on the dash and are watching videos or face timing! It's insane! |
You wait a second after the light turns green in case another driver, traveling perpendicular to your flow of traffic, burns their red light because they were: on the phone, speeding, oblivious etc. Not every intersection has the time buffer built in when lights alternate from red to green. |
