Car and cellphone manufacturers need to find a way to ban phone use when driving

With the gyroscopes and motion sensors in phones, it would be real easy to have them stop connecting when going over a certain speed.

But imagine the lawsuits when someone is rushing to a scene or hospital and trying to call ahead.

My phone had that for a while, it was super annoying because I would be sitting on the bus or train, catching up on work emails and suddenly it would yell at me for texting and driving, something I would never do.

Make the car a faraday cage.

talking is not the problem....imo.

its the ability to surf the web, watch, TV, play games and so forth. that people can't seem to curb their addiction during their drive.

In the end, we all just need to shut up and drive...

texting!!!

I also sick of being a passenger and being out in car mode. Repeatedly. (Repeatedly in the same ride)

My kid hates this too. We’re not driving

When moving at high speed, when touched the phone should frequently lock and demand a long passphrase be typed in to verify that the driver has time to pay attention.

Passengers can type it in. drivers will decide it's not worth it, or reach their ultimate Darwinism end quick

Another dumbass idea.

I've made a conscious decision to not surf/text, etc. when driving after almost getting in an accident after taking my eyes off the road for a "quick sec". Just not worth it.

People are way too shy about using their horn. I have zero hesitation to use it if the light turns green, and your break lights are still on. Either you're on the phone, or have very poor reaction time. You don't need to wait until the intersection is clear - lights already have a delay, and if you're paying attention looking around when the light was red, there's no reason to wait.

And then there's the swerving, veering into another lane.

Put down your G-damn phones, people. If you've been honked at, that means it's time to change your behavior.

I could not disagree with your first point more. I don’t use phone while driving and I always wait about one second after light turns green. I can’t tell you how many red light burners I see and I always wait a brief second before entering intersection.

I do agree with your last point. Get off the phones people!

I don't really understand this position. When you're waiting at a red light, what are you doing? Are you spaced out? If you're doing what your supposed to be doing and constantly looking around, then you don't need to wait a second or two after the light turns green to go. You will already know if the intersection is safe.

You wait a second after the light turns green in case another driver, traveling perpendicular to your flow of traffic, burns their red light because they were: on the phone, speeding, oblivious etc. Not every intersection has the time buffer built in when lights alternate from red to green.

Exactly. I was taught in driver’s Ed to wait a second to make sure someone is not ignoring the red and coming through the intersection. No need for Jack rabbit starts. Nothing is that important that you can’t wait a second to be safe.

This isn't the answer, care should automatically stop and drive for you.

This isn't necessarily the problem. It's also the people who go under the limit, or fluctuate, because they're on their phone. Slowing down so you can use your phone while driving IS NOT SAFER.

I will gladly take someone going 60 in a 45 but with all their eyes on the road and checking their mirrors constantly, than someone going 35 in a 45 but on their phone.

You don't seem to understand the PP post. Most people walk 1-3MPH, so you could have them stop at 3MPH.

We could be friends. I like how you think. Survival of the fittest and smartest.

At least the drunk drivers and pot smokers are looking straight a head.
