Self Check Out Thievery

Anonymous
A coworker was telling a funny story about being accosted for checking "0 bags" during check out when they had in fact used 3. She refused to pony up the 15 cents and they basically threatened to arrest her so she returned everything she had just bought and swore to bever enter that store again. Pretty stupid of the clerk if you ask me because she absolutely hold her grudge and that will cost the store about $500 a month.

Anyway that prompted basically the entire office to admit that they steal from the self check out under the guise of' if they make me do their job, they can pay me or I'll pay myself'. Most admitted to small stuff like saying they had 2 lemons instead of 3, or coding Pink Lady apples as if they were red delicious but the universal thread was EVERYBODY steals.

Why do stores allow this? Are the savings from firing cashiers enough to tolerate the theft?

I don’t go to stores with self checkout.

I only go to stores with self-Checkout. Cashiers are so rude and miserable in most places. Except Trader Joe’s.

I don’t, but I have seen people ahead of me in line do it. The stores must have decided it’s still cheaper than paying cashiers. It’s corrosive for society IMO

I never cheat at self checkout and I would think less of a friend or coworker that openly admitted to doing so. It makes me wonder what else they try to get away with when no one is watching.

That said, stores with self checkout have decided they’d rather take a hit from people stealing than pay more workers, so they get what they get.

I don't steal because it's not worth it to me to be called out for an apple, a couple of lemons or .15 worth of bags. I have class.

However, the stores knew this would happen when they went to mostly self check out. If enough revenue is lost, I assume they'll hire some cashiers back.

Who steals 15 cent bags? Or anything for that matter. Stores have cameras and will get you arrested you stealing. Over a certain amount and it's a felony.

FOFA.

Uh…yeah I can manage the nickel-per-bag fee if I don’t bring reusable bags from home.

Assuming your story is even true, your coworker sounds like she has serious mental problems.

They also know who is stealing and will let you get away with it until it reaches an amount that is a felony. Like they'll keep the video evidence. Then they will prosecute.

I would never cheat/steal from self checkout, because that is wrong.
But it does seem to be a big problem— both Walmart & Target have started enforcing limits on the number of items you can buy at self-checkout, it’s often closed altogether at Target, and some Five Below stores have stopped using it completely.

Wow, that is crazy. It's stealing.

I love self-check out. Though I hate when someone with a full basket of groceries ignores the 15 or less uses it AND hasn't a clue how to do it.

Target actually has a very complex anti-theft camera system and they will not ding you for small stuff, but they flag it and create a video file so that when you exceed the monetary amount that triggers a felony conviction, they will bring the charges along with ALL the accumulated video evidence to get a conviction.
It’s seriously diabolical next-level surveillance.
So choose wisely, shoplifting friends.

The bag fee is a tax.. I guess it's "stealing" from the government then?

Integrity is what you show when you think no one is watching.

The only time I have is when I have tried and tried to get something to scan, looked it up and tried and failed to find assistance. But it's never been more than a lemon or something like that.
