HS Party with Alcohol... Death

You would think uber would've completely solved the drunk driving issue for teens these days.

So the irresponsible lawyer parent plead guilty last week. No mention of the girl's other parent, and if she was also at home hosting the kids' drinking.

I heard it on the radio. He got off with a pathetic $5,000. fine. Utterly shameful.

He didn't "get off with a $5000 fine". The law states that the maximum penalty for each charge of supplying alcoholic beverages is $2500 per teenager. Apparently the state could only prove two charges since nearly the entire group of party goers retained attorneys and wouldn't talk to the police.

Surely, these poor kids drank on many occasions before the night in question. I think it's sad, but it was their decision to drink and drive. Now if this was the drivers first drinking experience, that's another story.

Suburban mom here. No one in my family has ever taken Uber. It may be big in DC, but not so much in our area.

Isn't there also a danger in intoxicated teens, especially girls, getting in the car with a complete stranger?! We tell them never ride with a stranger, and then just because the person is an Uber driver, it's magically ok?

#suburban problems

City kids take Uber all the time, but then again they are street smart and accustomed to navigating the city without parental oversight.

Yo suburban mom: you're embarrassing the rest of us. Please check into the 2000's.

The DC suburbs have uber. Not sure what suburb you are referring to that doesn't have uber. Even my elderly parents have downloaded uber for when they come visit.

Not true. The state could have been aggressive and charged him with Manslaughter because he acted negligent by giving the alcohol to the underage kids knowing they were driving and this contributed to the accident that killed two people. The state could have tried to set an example.

You aren't serious are you? In order to be liable for manslaughter, you actually have to be the person who did the killing, not someone somewhere in the chain of events that led up to it. It would be abuse of power to bring charges like that in this case.

Well, there was one drunk driver and two dead kids in the car as well as another underage passenger who had minor injuries. So that's at least 4 teenagers that the police knew about and were at the scene.

No. They knew they were in the car. That does not prove they drank at he house.
