This is exactly how the kids feel. What exactly do parents think there’s to gain from having your kid go to these very risky events? |
Here’s the thing... I didn’t drink in HS but if I wanted to have any friends at all I occasionally needed to go to these parties. There is no way my parents would allow me to go so I just lied. I got very good at lying because my parents didn’t trust me to do basically anything. Which I understand, but did they expect me to be okay with having zero friends through adolescence? I went to some of these parties but never did partake in drinking or drugs. It’s possible. |
| Drinking and driving is insane. |
Just got seven more for violating his probation - he was driving without the mandated interlock device. https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/courts/drunken-driver-whose-crash-killed-three-sent-back-to-prison-for-violating-probation/ |
Thank you so much for posting this. Every parent and teen needs to read what can easily happen when you fail to enforce healthy boundaries early on. This boy obviously thought the rules didn’t apply to him. His parents allowed it. Tragic. |
Omg, the judge Cho also pointed to a record of more than 100 times when the interlock recorded alcohol in Coffay’s body, within the one year after being released from prison. He was supposed to refrain from alcohol completely and indefinitely. That means that he attempted to drive 100 times after consuming alcohol after he was released from his shortened prison sentence. Her kills 3 kids, serves a greatly reduced sentence than the 20 years that he was sentenced to... and then he attempts to drive 100 times after drinking again.

That’s why he’s going back to prison. |
It’s so easy to blame parents. But none of us really knows whether they worked hard at parenting or were entitled. As a parent of a troubled teen and a friend of other parents with troubled teens, I can tell you this. Even when you work really hard at parenting, sometimes your kids don’t turn out the way you hoped - and the way your other kids did. You are lucky if you never experienced this. |
+1 this is an important reminder. I haven’t dealt with it but seeing how different my kids all are despite being raised in the same family is eye opening. I Have a friend whose child is troubled and it was obvious from elementary school that was the direction he was heading despite parents enforcing consequences. There by the grace of God go I... Sorry for your situation. |
Omg it took too long to get him off the road... he could have easily killed three more people. |
I cannot wrap my head around this at all. How on earth does killing 3 teenagers NOT resonate enough with you, that you wouldnt give up alcohol forever?? I would be SUPER pissed if I were this judge and saw the report from the interlock system. You kill 3 teenagers while you're driving drunk and recklessly & dangerously speeding, after the accident you then attempt to flee the scene & are sentenced to 20 years behind bars. That sounded about right and fair. Then here comes some boneheaded 3 judge panel, who decides that you shouldn't have to serve out your entire 20 year sentence, right?? Just 4 measly years will do just the same. Heck, we'll even give you back your driver's license and it's now CLEAN (how is that even possible??)... we just have a few tiny caveats for you to abide by, it should be a walk in the park One, you need to give up drinking alcohol indefinitely and two, you need to have an interlock system installed on your car and make sure you use every time you drive, ok? That's all there is to it, boom! You get your license back and you're free to go, have a great life, kid! We know you'll make the most of it and you'll honor those 3 kids that you killed, by doing the right thing, amiright?? Sigh... what a great kid! I'm positive we'll never see him back in our courtroom again, that kid has a bright future ahead of him!
Can you imagine the looks on those 3 judges faces (the panel who slashed his sentence to nothing) after the court received the report for his interlock back? In the 12 months since being released, not only did he attempt to disable the interlocking system almost every time he drove, but he actually attempted to DRIVE after he had been drinking, over one hundred times! HE ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE AFTER HE HAD BEEN DRINKING OVER 100 TIMES?!
It's not bad enough that he wasn't supposed to be drinking AT ALL under the terms of his probation; but after he DID drink, he then attempted to get in the car and drive AFTER he'd been drinking and he did this over 100 times! What in the actual f#ck??? Something tells me that this selfish motherf*cker learned absolutely NOTHING from killing those 3 young lives, that he so selfishly stole from the world. |
| It sounds like the kid is an active hard core alcoholic. His behavior is typical of alcolics not in recovery. |
|
Can I just point out that he is NOT a kid? He was 20 when the wreck occurred. He’s a grown ass man the and especially now at 29.
I drive by the crash site every day. My teenage sons wear the “happiness”/promise to not drink and drive shirts often. I can’t imagine the continued pain of his victims’ families. |
| Good god is our justice system messed up. Why did it take so long for the reinstatement of the 7 years to kick in? The article says he immediately began violating the terms of his probation immediately after receiving his license again. He shouldn’t have been able to get past 1 time of blowing into the interlock and alcohol being found. That one time should have immediately triggered revocation of his probation. And if the expectation was he shouldn’t drink, he should have been given an alcohol monitoring bracelet. |
