S/o: is it “trashy” of parents to have their infant daughter’s ears pierced?

Are you that ignorant? Flu shot is for health, earrings are for what exactly? So strangers can tell it’s a girl in case the child isn’t already in a girly outfit? Is it important for strangers to know the gender of your child?

Though I wish we had held off as my tom boy ended up tearing her ear lobe rough housing. I think in general its fun to leave the choice to the kid but we had bad luck

Ears pierced as an infant have to be repierced once most of the time. It's because the ear changes too much during childhood and the holes end up looking bad by the time they are in the teens.

There’s a kid in my daughters preK with a torn earlobe. Her mom said it happened at 2 and that the plastic surgeon wanted to wait until she was older to fix it. No cute earrings would be worth looking at my daughters permanent injury from something she hadn’t even asked for.

I'm surprised by how many people think ear piercing is mutilation. I say this as someone who hasn't worn earrings in literally over a decade who hasn't gotten any of her children's ears pierced so this is not coming from a place of defensiveness at all. I just think to qualify as mutilation it has to do more damage than ear piercing does.
